Canecutter rabbits!
« on: August 09, 2008, 09:38:42 AM »
I have always enjoyed hunting the crazy Canecutter Swamper's, next to seeing a big ole buck slipping thru a swamp bottom theres nothing more exciting than hearing a pack of beagles driving a big ole swamper thru ankle deep water....LOVE IT LOVE IT!

I took a friend from Fort Wayne Indiana swamp rabbit hunting about ten years ago he thought i was messing with him about how they would swim up or down a creek to elude the dogs, well the first rabbit they ran i set him up on a bend in the creek and crouched behind him just to watch, well sure enough that ole swamper slid in the creek and swam right up to my Yankee buddy who made a great head shot at about fifteen feet. You would have thought he'd killed a ten point buck the way he carried on, he examined that swamper from head to tail! That was ten years ago but till this day he always brings that kill up when we speak about hunting.

I never heard of hunting them like that. I didn't know they would do that. Sounds pretty fun. 8)

Yeah, I like to hunt rabbits with some of my friends. I like the stories about the one that got away. There always seem to be a few of those stories. (LOL)

Nope, they are totally opposite! The canecutter swamp rabbit lives in the deep south mostly along any water system that harbours enough cover for them to thrive.  The jack rabbit i believe is in the Hare family even though the word rabbit is used in the name! Dont know much about these critters, never even seen one!

The swamp rabbit is in the cottontail family and can weigh up to eight pounds but most are around five when mature. Thats twice to three times the size of a regular cottontail!

Canecutters are new on me as well.  Biggest rabbits I ever saw were the jack rabbits that shared the outfield with us while playing softball.  Never hunted then though as heard the best way to cook them was to include an old shoe in the pot and then eat the shoe.

Canecutters gotten a few myself when we use to hunt goshen ocean (big swamp with a lot of water) near Faison NC.  There are a few still here but you have to get into the swamp.  Just a bigger cottontail usually a little darker like a swamp deer is.   --9-8-7
