Are you permitted to carry a sidearm while Bowhunting?
« on: June 18, 2009, 10:40:26 PM »
@--0--0117 Just curious if your state allows the carrying of a sidearm during your Archery season. Here in CT it is not allowed under any circumstances. How about your state, and do you and your hunting partners agree with it? %^$^

It is not allowed here in TX during the archery deer season.  I don't agree with the law but I understand why we have it.  With the infestation of wild hogs throughout much of the country it may be time to reconsider allowing it.  It's a scary thing walking quietly to the stand before daylight only to become aware you have walked right into a group of wild hogs.  I see them often in the evenings too and wished several times I had a 40 cal w/red dot sight strapped to my side.  If it were allowed I would definately carry it for safety sake.  I'm not a good enough shot to hunt with it but in close range to wild hogs I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

Same here in Michigan, but if I remember right, in Colorado you can carry open while bowhunting.  I hear ya Russcat, here in Michigan it isn't a good thought to be hunting bear with a bow and trying to walk out at night without any protection!

Yeah, russ, they need to change that. I carry a large machete with me but it would be nice to have a gun if you come across hogs or a big cat!  --7-8-9

As long as your not carrying a scoped 10 inch barrel hunting rig, I dont see why they would not let us carry I think its just one of those laws that hasnt had  a little common sense applied to it.

In NY, no firearm is permitted to accompany a bow hunter during the bow season, and this includes off duty law enforcement personnel.

It is illegal to have a sidearm, or any firearm in the field while bowhunting in California.  You can have one in camp. But, if you have read my post about bear encounter,s you'll understand why I carry all the time. While bowhunting or not. I realize I could be sited under fish and game law's, but it's better than being dead.

Yes it is allowed here in Alabama. But I never seen a reason to do so. But if hogs keep getting worse I will probably start carrying one.

Unless something has changed real recent, it is illegal in Alabama to carry any type firearm during bow season regardless of caliber. I will check on this to make certain.

As was previously mentioned, not here in NJ.  I sure wish we could though...I'd feel a lot better about the bears if I could.

No firearms allowed with bow hunter here in NY. A bowhunter could not have a muzzleloader hunter accompany them even through the seasons overlap here.

Good Point Zos41, and a dangerous trap for some hunting camps that host both types of members during the overlapping seasons.  Thanks for pointing it out.
