Now you mention it curs1, I have seen the DEC in both Massachusetts and New York do this to control beaver dam height in areas where there were roads or other reason to keep the flooded area from getting to big. It seems to work well, The ones I have seen seem to be 12 to 30 inches in diameter for the pipes.

the bigger the better but we used what we had  from  the tile pipe  we used    in our  Fields. Actually bigger the better especially if it is a  big  dam ours were mostly in drainage  ditches so why we used the  pipe we had. Too close to the  "censored Word" and they  will block the  end why it is important to  have it further out and under water if  possible on the outlet  side

Beavers can be a problem, but I sure miss the ones we had on our place. They damed up the creek and flooded maybe 20 acres. It was a great pond that had plenty of fish and the wood ducks loved it @--0--0121 @--0--0121. About 2 months ago we got about 10 inches of rain in about 12 hrs. All that water washed away not only the dam but it must have washed the beavers and their lodge. sure wish they would return, I splashed many a duck in that pond.
