I've got my Remington 700 BDL 7MM Mag that I've had for over thirty years and wouldn't trade it for anything. That being said, I'm looking at adding a new barrel to my T/C 209x50 smoke pole. I'm leaning toward the new 338 Federal or Ruger 338 RSM as both ballistically surpass the 308 and almost match the 338 Win Mag. You also have the advantage of the sectional density of the 33 caliber bullet. These will take anything on North America without the magnum recoil. So many new choices and limited funds, what's a gun lover to do? @--0--0101

Save your pennies and buy one of each --099-780 Both are excellant rounds, so it could come down to which one you can get the best deal on

I like both rifles and also the Ruger M-77 and Savages.  For caliber, I like slightly different calibers such as the .25-06, 7mm-08, and .308, but you cannot go wrong with the two you mentioned.

SINCE YOU HAVE A 30 06 BUY THE REM 700 IN 30 06, YOU CAN BUY ONE ROUND FOR BOTH RIFLES, THATS WHAT I DO. YOU CAN GET MANAGED RECOIL ROUNDS FOR YOUR SON AND YOU DONT NEED TO RESIGHT IT IN, GOOD LUCK

Thanks for the input  I bought my son a Rem 770 in 270 cal and have my eyes on either a Rem 700 or the Browning A-Bolt but now have advanced to the X-Bolt  can't make up my mind what cal 270 or stay with the 30-06 leaning toward the 270

The 270 is a good flat shooter and god knows it has taken it's share of big game in the US but I would probably lean more to the 06 because of the variety of rounds available and it is also a proven game getter. @--0--0118

Whats wrong  with  a .308?   in a nice bolt action... @--0--0105

just my 2 cents...

but  either one is a great rifle!
Red I like the 308 too. The short action makes for a nice light rifle for long hikes in the high country.

I'm a life long fan of the .308 caliber, wouldnt swap my old M77 Ruger-Nikon scope for anything.
