Deer breeding
« on: January 25, 2021, 04:30:04 PM »
I have a small ranch in Texas that has lots of whitetail deer and occasionally other deer breeds.  Lately we have seen an influx of axis deer.  I know fallow deer do not cross-breed with whitetail since their breeding cycles do not align.  However, axis deer do not have a specific breeding time (although summer is the primary breeding time) and they can and do breed all year long.  Can axis deer breed with whitetail during the whitetail breeding times?  I know they are different species but cows can breed with buffalo yielding buffacows and beefalos (depending on which species is male, and mules are male donkeys bred with female horses.  If axis and whitetail can interbreed, are offspring fertile?

Jerry - That is a good question....everything I have read in print and on the internet (good sites) and seen on TV, Axis Deer are not suppose to breed with whitetails at all...they are not even interested in the whitetail does....

But.....you never know about deer of any species do you.....

A good place to advertise for your business is here on TH.....give it a try...you might run a special on whitetail bucks and does or Axis bucks.....just a thought.....

Thanks for the info.  I suspected that axis bucks would not breed whitetail for but thought that frisky whitetail bucks might be interested in axis doe.  We are just thinking about harvesting axis deer this year because we wanted to get them established in the area.  They have a birthing about every 8 months.  I have not taken any the but they have on neighboring ranches.  The ranch owners association has restrictions on day hunts but I do have people come for extended hunts for hogs.  We are getting over run with them and we take them out 1or 2 in a trip and they have litters of 4 to 6 every 4 months.  We eat all we shoot and keep our freezer full. In Texas, you do not even need a license to hunt pigs.  I do 3 day hunts for $100 and we eat lots of stir fried pork and schnitzel.  Let me know if you have any interest.

Jerry - this guy says no on the crossbreeding question between whitetail and axis deer:   http://wkcurrent.com/boutique-game-animals-p551-72.htm#:~:text=If%20it's%20round%20the%20deer%20is%20a%20whitetail.&text=I'm%20often%20asked%20if,well%2C%20which%20rules%20out%20reproduction.

I'd like to hear more about your hog hunt opportunities.  What part of Texas are you in and what time of the year do you offer hog hunts?  I'm up in the liberal stronghold of Illinois, but my youngest is heading to TX in May for a summer internship (Plano area) and I might have to connect a hog hunt to a daughter visit.
