NM elk hunt
« on: August 08, 2020, 04:35:30 PM »
this is a long shot, but anyone looking for an elk hunt? NM has a 14 day quarantine rule. I've heard everyone is cancelling their elk hunts. if anyone has 14 days vacation or retired(MAD) you could probably get a sweet elk hunt in NM.

if I didn't have my AZ hunt planned, I would be all over this. the outfitter are empty. no outstate hunters are going

Yari - I would love to hear more.  Do you have any links to more info?  My bro in law and I were hoping to get a hunt arranged for Wyoming, but a variety of things (including Covid) have gotten in the way.  I doubt he'd be able to go to NM with me but you never know.

mad- all I can tell you is my AZ guide had 100% cancellations in NM and I will be the only guy in AZ camp that week. this is all speculation, but I would think the NM guides need some cash flow and would take something vs nothing. if you know any  'hunt booking agents', I would start there

the NM governor is a lib an initiated the 14 day quarantine. it took everyone by surprise. make hay when everyone else is baling is the way I roll.

good luck

Yari I havnt been on here for over a year. How did you Arizona hunt go?

i remember it like it was yesterday. i didn't kill anything, but had 2 booners w/i 40 yards and no shot. one was only about 6-7 yards just roaring.

it was tinder dry. any water had dozens of elk. it was too much of a good thing. trying to get past so many eyes was hard. it was a premier zone, so i was holding out for a stud. i passed on 8-9 bulls under 330" at close range. we called one busted up old bull(way past prime) 3 times

now i wait another +17years for a tag

FYI this year has been record rains and the grasses are almost too tall to get a shot. i would love to be there right now!

i can't wait 20 more years. i think i will need to buckle done and buy a landowner tag in NM. if you do the math, it's the same price as 15-20 years of app fees for AZ. elk hunts are crazy money these days for big elk areas

are you going hunting anywhere Notsams?

It doesnt look like I will be. We applied for muledeer in montana but didnt get drawn. I bought a prefence point for Colorado Elk so should get to go Elk hunting next year. We decided to go to SD bowhunting about 3 weeks ago so I went on line to check on the price of the license and found out we had to apply by August 1st.  It just seems like I cant get a out of state license this year. 1st time in about 15 years. I might try go on a coyote hunt this winter in SD or ND or we have been invited to florida to go fishing this winter too.      Some buddies of mine got back from Colorado yesterday. they got a cow and a calf Elk but saw lots of Elk the 1st couple days then all the other hunters showed up and the Elk vanished. my buddys went up as high as they could get and saw lots of bulls but missed 2 shots.

Yari it used to be OTC. But I quess its been this way for a couple years. If you are hunting private property "not" enrolled in the walk in areas you can apply later in the year. all land open to the public is treated different.

Yari I just looked it up again.  It all started in 2019. In 2019 nonresident archery app deadline was August 1st. In 2020 and here after the deadline for non resident archery is April 1st.   I know a guy who applied and did get drawn.

i still see tags left over, but it doesn't say res or non res. it wouldn't hurt to call SD DNR. you might get lucky. they are easier to talk to than WI DNR
