Maryland Bird Down!
« on: May 17, 2020, 11:08:01 AM »
Haven't posted since day one of the Maryland turkey season but there hasn't been much to report, until yesterday.Prior to yesterday, the season has seen either no gobbling at all or turkeys that gobble but will not answer back and just go their merry way continuing to gobble. It would be safe to assume that the gobblers are traveling with their hens and have no need to respond to a call from a hunter! I had one turkey, which I call the Ridge Gobbler, gobbled continuously for nearly two straight hours high atop a nearly unapproachable ridge line.He would never answer to a call or various attempts to outwit him proved unsuccessful! Let's forward to Friday, May 15th. I am sitting in a blind located at the bottom of the ridge this particular turkey likes to hang out. I am determined to try and figure out a way to get him today.
At 5:30 AM he begins to gobble in the tree where he roosted for the night. He continues to gobble every few minutes and he is probably on the ground now. I make a hen call and he answers back! I am thinking, did he just gobble back to me? He hasn't done this at all since I met him in April! I call again and this time he is absolutely near screaming his gobble at me making his way down from the ridge. We continue this conversation for the next 20 minutes and he is interrupting my every call with a double gobble! He is now close, probably 50-60 yards out and he will not come any closer. I call again, he gobbles but will not budge. I can hear him going back and forth still gobbling but still will not come any closer. Mature gobblers know that in the real world in which they live, the hens call and they will go to the gobbler. He is a mature gobbler and is now waiting for the hens (decoys) to come to him. He will not move and is holding his ground.
At the same time this is going on, two additional turkeys walk into the decoys for a closer examination. They begin to walk away and then one returns. I determine that they are young gobblers and are faced with either waiting on the Ridge Gobbler to make a move (which I really doubt he will) or take the shot and try to harvest one of these. Decision is made to take one of the turkeys in the zone and at 6:25 AM ,down he goes!
I thought today was the day that I would take home the Ridge Gobbler, but as usual, they always have different plans! And that's why turkey hunting is usually nothing more than a chess match played out in the woods with the turkey often saying, "Checkmate!" I wouldn't have it any other way and that's what makes it so much fun! Here are some pictures from the morning,

Congrats again, On Memorial Day I saw my first hen with her hatch of about 10 poults sneaking through the woods around 8:30 in the morning. Then at around 11:45 I was able to call in a jake for my buddy and he made a clean miss at 45 yards. It was the first bird that we got into gun range all month. It was still a great time in the woods. I'm going to give it a try again the last couple days here. The season ends on Saturday the 30th.
