How far do you shoot your deer?
« on: November 05, 2019, 09:31:18 PM »
I don't recall what got me started on this last night, but I started writing down all of the deer I could recall taking with shotgun, bow/Xbow, and smokepole, and the ranges I was shooting.  I'm sure I forgot a few but I'd expect they fall in line with this data for the most part.

There were 26 that I could recall, 6 with a shotgun (slugs), 10 with archery gear, and 10 with the muzzleloader.
10 of those were inside of 10 yards (6 of the 10 archery harvests)
16 of the 26 were inside of 25 yards (all of the archery, 1 shotgun, and 5 with the smokepole)
21 of the 26 were inside of 50 yards
longest was 140 (last year's doe with smokepole) and next longest was 97 (a bit of a Hail Mary over 30 years ago with smoothbore shotgun)

Now granted I took all of these deer in IL where centerfire rifles are not allowed for deer and for most of the areas I hunt a long shot simply isn't likely to present itself due to the terrain & cover, but I don't recall passing on many over the years due to excessive distance (with a gun in hand at least).

Last year I helped a friend set up his slug gun with a scope.  I gathered all the ballistics info together & recommended he zero it at 75 yards.  Had a hard time convincing him to do that (and not to buy a high magnification scope) but I think I finally got my point across to him about max PBR, wish I would have sat down back then to write down the numbers on the deer I've shot, might have made it easier to convince him.  I do potentially have a family member wanting to step into the sport, so I will hang on to this info and use that to help them get set up for success when the time comes.  While there are always exceptions to the trend, it only makes sense to be sure your equipment is well suited to the most likely scenario.

One with my 450 @ 170 yards
One with my muzzleloader @ 100 yards.
All the rest under 40 yards with rifle/muzzleloader.

All with bow/crossbow under 40 yards.

My main hunting location is a field where I can see 600+ yards and am limited to shotgun or certain straight walled cartridges (i.e. the 450 BM).  My spot in the rifle zone is to heavily wooded to get a shot much past 50 yards.  Ahh the irony.  LOL.

As I hunt all public land in PA with a rifle or bow, the longest kill was a doe 2 years ago at 183 yards with my Howa .270 measured with a Leiupold range finder after the shot, she dropped in her tracks. Over the past 54 years I don't recall shooting any deer over 100 yards, most were 70 yards and under. With the bow, 40 yards is the farthest known with the use of a rangefinder, most were inside 20 yards.

Rifle Shot on an Elk several years ago was at 210 yards in Colorado.

164 yard rifle shot on a doe a couple years ago where we are permitted to hunt with a rifle in VA.

110 yard shot with Black powder and doe went about 20 yards and dropped.

BUT, I try to stick to 100 yard shots with a rifle, no more than 70 with my black powder or slug shotgun.

When we were only allowed to hunt deer with 000 Buck shot I wouldn't shoot over 60 yards.

I can remember 1 doe in PA 205 yds 1 Doe in Pa 200 yds. Most of my kills in Pa have been within 100 yds. I use a slug gun in Md made a 130 yd shot on a 5 pt one year again most of my shots are within 100 yds with most being around 60 yds. Same for the muzzleloader except a doe and a 6 pt I shot at 125 yds.

Most of my deer have been within 100 yards and within that, mostly at 50 or 60 yards  just due to foilage and terrain. Turkeys have been 28 yards or lessi

I prefer up close and personal, regardless of the weapon. Part of the excitement of the hunt itself, that being up close and personal, any slip and game over. For me, that just makes the hunt that more challenging and intense. The kind where you find yourself almost afraid to breathe out loud!

turkey season was a wet one now on to deer hunting in October

My longest shot with a slug was 88 steps. Shortest 18 yds.
