Fall Turkey Success! (The Rest of the Story)
« on: November 01, 2019, 08:48:38 AM »
OK, so I told you the success part of the story, now here is the rest! A few days before the hunt, I do some scouting and find a tree I want to sit in front of, not far from my tree stand. I put a reflective tack on it so I can find it in the dark. I walk past my stand and look for the tack and cannot find it. I backtrack to the stand several times and still cannot find it. I can't understand what happened but I walk out what I think is 30-40 yards, find a tree and a small clearing and get set up. Put out some decoys, get my calls out and wait for daylight. As it gets lighter I look to my left and now I am not sure if I am 150 yards from a house that sits below the flat I am on. I can see the trees and I am pretty sure I am but still a little uncomfortable. (In Maryland we have to be 150 yards from an occupied building unless we have permission). So I'm trying to decide what to do and I look for the decoys and they are not where I thought I put them. I must have got turned around in the dark because instead of being out in front of me, they are 90 degrees to my right. How can I get that turned around by walking 25 yards? I can't shoot that way due to the tree so I'm a little frustrated because I will have to move everything and it's already light out. So I pack everything up and move around 40 more yards into the woods, find a tree and a clearing, set up the decoys, get my calls out and once again, get ready. I wait a couple of minutes and start the cold calling process and the rest of that story is in my original post. So now you know, "The rest of the story..."

Thank you Paul Harvey for the Rest of the Story.  --099-780 Getting turned around in the dark is very easily accomplished. I'm glad you got it all figured out. The reflective tacks are great for marking trails to a specific location. One tack on a tree at approximately every ten yards and a diamond with the tacks on the target tree for this is the spot. A gps works very well also, mark the tree you want to sit by as a waypoint. You can locate it from anywhere.  @--0--0118

Man, I've been there BC.  It's amazing how different things appear when you're not in the daylight.  All's well that ends well!
