Finding a build date for Remington 700
« on: May 11, 2019, 05:17:54 PM »
Bro in law just bought an old used Remington 700, a 7mm mag with stainless barrel.  Trying to help him figure out production year.  Serial number is 171XXX.  From some of the other barrel markings it is either March of 70 or December of 69.  Can't find anything that references the actual build timing based on serial numbers.  Anyone aware of whether that exists?

Yeah Sundowner, that was one of the sites I looked at.  There seems to be some extra markings on this one, so not sure which two letters define the build year.  It also has a repair stamp, which I assume was for the trigger recall but I need to verify that too.  The gun has quite a bit of external wear but has a very light and crisp trigger pull. Supposed to be a great shooter, still need to get the handload recipe from the previous owner.

Yes, he and I have been talking about an elk hunt for 30 years.  We can only use centerfire in IL for vermin (yotes, woodchucks, etc).  I bought my Ruger #1 in 7mm Mag a long time ago with the intention of hunting elk with it, but right after that I lost the connection I had to do it with.  Job and kids and everything else have been in the way since, time to get it done while I'm still physically able.   We'd like to do it mostly on our own rather than signing up with an outfitter, but we'll see - lots of planning has to happen yet.

it's a blast. these days, unless you have a connection I would look into a guide or outfitter to get you away from the crowds. especially if you are gun hunting. I've heard some horror stories of once in a life time trips going bad

just my opinion
