Bird down in PA!
« on: April 30, 2019, 07:52:27 PM »
Back in the turkey woods again! I was hunting on a friend's property in Pennsylvania this morning. After a few conversations with the usual un-cooperative gobblers, I took up a new position and called and waited but nothing. I had heard some rustling in the woods behind me but very quietly. Wasn't sure what it was but soon found out I was being hunted by a wary gobbler! He came up behind me and to the right as quiet as he could be and spotted me. I heard the 'put' alarm and he took off up a hill at a rather astonishing speed!
Not to be deterred, I waited until the woods settled down and called again. On top of a very large hill, a gobbler sounded off! I called back and so did he. We played the game for a few minutes as I could tell he was coming down the hill to my calls. Then I heard a second gobbler with him. They were coming in fast so I had to reposition my decoys and myself to be in a good spot if they kept coming. Then all went quiet. I thought I had been spotted again.
After what seemed like forever, I peeked around a large tree I was sitting next to and there they were, not more than 15 yards from me and one was in a full strut position. But they would not move forward toward the decoys. My gut told me they were smart birds and were waiting for the hens (decoys) to come to them, as it is in the turkey world. They finally started to move ever so slowly. My nerves were right at the edge, in a good way, and I decided I would shoot the first one that looked the other way. Well, one did and I shot and the Winchester Long Beard #6 shells from the Mossberg 835 did what they were intended to do, and the gobbler went down! What a morning hunt! I must continue to thank God for the passion He has given me to hunt and the opportunity to harvest one of His turkeys!

Congrats, Bearclaw, that is a great story, and a great bird, to boot!  Makes me wish I could keep hunting turkey this spring.

I was wondering when you were going to post a picture with a bird, I knew it wouldn't be long.  Well done!  Now we await the pics of you with those monster pond bass!!

Great bird and story BC - really glad you were able to get out in the woods and take a crack at one.  Isn't it amazing how they can slip in so close without being spotted?
