turkey season 2019
« on: April 20, 2019, 03:28:12 PM »
I had a great day. I was covered in birds all morning. the first tom was on the border of shooting range, but some brush in the way. I called his hen in and he came in full strut. no shot

the second was only 20 yards, also w/ at least 5 hens. the first 2 came in perfectly. he hung up in the thick brush w/ the other 3 hens. I naturally had to cough after 5 minutes in full display(heartburn) the 2 hens didn't mind a bit. I think he got uneasy? they all walked away after another 5 minutes. SO CLOSE

the 3rd was trailing 2 hens. they came through at 25 yards. he was way back and cut the angle instead of following their path. that angle saved him.

i'll be after them at dark thirty again tomorrow morning. there seemed to be a lot of birds.

mad, your call worked great. I alternate it w/ my Cody slate call. they have 2 totally different tones. some toms like the higher tone

tough day. I had 2 hens fly off roost and spend 1 hour in front of me. very little gobbling on roost and none off roost. what a difference a day makes.

this is opening weekend, the first season. I heard one shot yesterday and none today. that's crazy

as I was walking out, I noticed dirt bike tracks all over. I think one of the owners was running all over yesterday. if he did it late in the day, he most likely drove the birds out of there. one trail goes right by one of the roosting trees of the bulk of toms roost on

I may be able to get out Tuesday. that is my last day of the first season.

Sounds like a good day in the woods.  I heard my first gobbling this year, early this morning while walking the newest addition to our family. More of that to come later.  Anyway, I'm excited as my season starts tomorrow morning.

That all makes for a great day in the field, I can't wait for our season to kick off this Saturday in PA. I hope to get into some of those mountain long beards.
