4th rut??????????
« on: February 28, 2019, 04:31:52 PM »
on the way home from work, I saw what looked like 2 bucks chasing a doe. I was on the HWY, but got a pretty good look. does will recycle until they are bred, but this is wat too late. this would put the fawns born august or sept.

hopefully she gets away. there is no way a fawn born then would make it through winter

Same as here in Maryland but I don't get out in the woods much until turkey season in April to see who is chasing who. I guess there are always exceptions to the rules of engagement.

Our fawns normally arrive in May & June here (Nov & Dec breeding) but occasionally we'll see a little one later - very rarely.  That seems crazy late Yari, especially with the crazy weather you've had this year - both bucks and does need to be concentrating on keeping enough fat on to survive.
One of God's greatest gifts to us is
the great outdoors - get out there
and enjoy it!

i had some very young fawns down here this year. they had spots into early october. they are still alive, but small. i just bought some corn for my dad to put out. he has 8-10 come in every night. no bucks. there have been o bucks over 1 1/2 coming to his corn all fall and into the winter. i just find this very odd. i have a cam to prove it. in years past, there was always a stud buck coming in. @--0--0117 @--0--0117

i've seen bucks breed w/o antlers. heck i saw a buck w/o antler in november

have to ask WV, but i think it's a function of food, nutrients and daylight

Yeah, I believe that is true.  Bucks lose their antlers when their testosterone drops.  When there is breeding still to do, the testosterone stays high thus keeping their antlers.  (Could be due to a bad buck:doe ratio?)
