I know what to say, as this is a topic I've studied pretty closely (my mother passed away as a result of CJD in '88 - at the time we were told it was very rare, roughly one in 5 million deaths were related to this - we've since learned it isn't that rare, simply were many undiagnosed or misdiagnosed cases prior to that point).

I would tell you that Michael Osterholm is a pathetic fear monger.  As you'll see in the clip below from that article, he's the director of a research center.  Those research centers thrive on research grants.  The more hysteria you can whip up, the more grant money you stand to harvest.  Is CWD something that is worthy of ongoing study?  Absolutely.  Is it something to get hysterical about?  Hardly.

From the article:
"While there have been no reported cases of CWD in people, Michael Osterholm, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told lawmakers that the disease should be treated as a public health issue, claiming human cases of CWD will likely be “documented in the years ahead.”

“It is probable that human cases of CWD associated with the consumption of contaminated meat will be documented in the years ahead. It is possible that number of human cases will be substantial and will not be isolated events,” he said, in part, according to the Twin Cities Pioneer Press."

Osterholm's statements about human cases being "probably, likely" and "substantial" in the future are nothing more than a bunch of grandstanding to gain publicity and grant money, fueling more hysteria as if our country needed more of that right now.  After decades since we've known of CWD, there's zero correllation to humans that have been diagnosed with CJD, and frankly CWD existed long before we knew about it.  Yes, human manipulation of things (game farms, etc) can increase the prevalence of CWD, but with reasonable care (don't eat an obviously sick animal, stay out of brain cavity, etc) the risks to humans is incredibly low.  I've seen first hand the horrific situation for people with CJD and wouldn't wish it on anyone.  At the same time I'm not at all concerned about harvesting, butchering, and eating a whitetail or two every year.

My apologies for the rant, but people like that are a waste of good oxygen.

The mooing is not as bad as the production of abundant methane Deerhead.  I can put on noise cancelling ear protection, but they haven't figured out how to tame the gaseous emissions yet!
