red28,

go to sportsman guide and you can see that .308 ammo can come in 110 gr and 125 gr bullets, good to go for yotes and doesn't require a new rifle

I like .223 if you go with the V-max you usually do not get a exit hole .  --09--0 @--0--0107

I personally like a 22 hornet or a 22 mag, both very accurate, but I noticed alot of predator hunters are going to the 17 hmr., I don't know to much about these guns.

Got a .204 last year. It is  one amazing little gun. Deadly accurate and has taken several coyotes in the last year. Dropped em all on the spot.

.223 on up depending if you are trying to sell the fur.if you are planning on selling the fur stay with the smaller calibers.

Totally agreed.

Small caliber full metal jacket reduces the entrance and exit hole size.  I use a .223 as well but I hunt coyotes in an area where one seldom gets a shot of more that 150 yards.  In the extreme open range country of the western plains, a 22-250 might be better.

However, in these economic times, one may want to stick to the advice of an old Montana rancher, long deceased now, that I knew as a kid, "A wolf hunts with the teeth he's got."  Ole Neal Flint, ranched in the Missouri breaks over looking the Fort Peck Lake.  He hunted EVERYTHING from jack rabbits to mule deer with a 22 Hornet.  I wouldn't recommend a 22 Hornet for large game but, his analogy does have some merit.

If one wants to start hunting coyote and only owns a scoped 30-06, I would recommend finding some military ball (non-corrosive) ammo and start hunting!  If a shotgun is all that is currently available, acquire some 000 buck and head to the field.  Both are commendable for taking coyotes, only the hunters tactics would need to be changed.

Several hundred dollars to purchasse a 'coyote gun' along with the scope might be put to better use by some making a house payment or paying off other debt that could end up forcing a person to take a part-time job (if available) that might make even getting in the field prohibitive.

.223 is the way to go, long distance accuracy, flat shooting and quick. I shot one last fall with a .50 cal TC Omega. The 300 grain bullet didn't make tooooooooo big a exit hole.

I"ve been using my 17 HMR for the last couple of years and I love it. With the V-MAX bullet it has no trouble putting them down. Plenty people think it's to small until they try it.

You would have a real problem to get that one mounted I bet . Have to look for a hide transplant .  --099-780

I shot one with my 300 win mag, last year during rifle season. It left a big hole, so i would say it is not the best gun for the job. Unless u just want target practise.

I hunt varmits with a Savage Tactic Model 10 in .223 cal.  It's a real tack driver and I love it.  If I could choose any caliber now after seeing and comparing the knockdown power, long range accuracy, noise level, etc I would probably go with a 22-250.  If a 308 is all you got then a 308 would work great.  If you can choose my nod goes to the
22--250.

We hunt at night a lot.  Back in the day we didn't have to worry too much about people calling us in.  Eventhough we are legal, these days we get called in a lot.  THis is why noise level is important to me and why I love my .223.  I've made shots at night out to 300 yds and don't have to worry about the sound carrying into the next county waking up every one.  The .223 has all the power and trajectory you need but you won't blow your eardrums out when shooting it.

Redneck Reindeer, what load are you using in the .204?  My cz-527 will nail dimes with just about anything, but I want to use "enough bullet".  I always see them ('yotes) when I don't have the gun in hand, tricksy critters.
