Y'all don't laugh, he ain't exactly a wall hanger.
« on: December 11, 2018, 09:20:39 PM »
I love a big set of antlers as much as the next guy but in our part of the world, letting the little ones walk doesn't work.  You feed them year 'round, food plots, supplements and grain, he then jumps the fence and somebody else kills him.  Our farm is only 80 acres and our lease is only 340 acres with no way to implement anything like a management program.   The Game Commission has started implementing some antler restrictions that seem to help, I imagine they will up the requirements a bit every so often, maybe. @--0--0117
Monday evening I had 2 big does (no fawns or yearling with them) show up at the clay pit where our grandson killed his 5 point. They played musical chairs around the feeder for a bit and would disappear in the thick scrub around the pit from time to time.  About 4:45, they both began to stare at something I couldn't see.  Finally a little 6 point eased through the overgrown clay pit and made it up to the top by the corn feeder. There he met a 100gr .243 bullet and dropped on his nose.

Yari, she's 1/2 Chocolate Lab and 1/2 Red merle Australian Shepard .  They are a hybrid known as an "Aussiedor".  This one looks like a pile of leaves in the yard!  She is my wife's dog, she is gun shy and thunder causes her to become very nervous.  When she was almost a year old, I shot a buck from a shooting house on our place.  He ran and I saw him flip out in some planted pines.  So I went to the house and brought her back to the spot where the deer was hit to see what she would do.  She trailed him and has been a pretty good blood trailer ever since.  She doesn't bark when she finds a deer so you have to pay attention as she works out the trail, she'll find the deer and move on.  Several weeks ago a friend shot a doe with a crossbow and he was unable to find her because of so much storm damage, trees down, etc.   The deer was shot on  Saturday afternoon, he mentioned it a church on Sunday. Right after church I took "Flossie" to the sight of the crime and within 15 minutes she had found the doe that had been dead about 18 hours  Thankfully it was cool and the deer was not spoiled and the coyotes hadn't found her.

No need to apologize for what you put in the freezer, size only matters when you try to fill the belly. Congrats on a fine deer, he won't go to waste and the antlers can make a great chew toy for the dog.

Congrats Treefarmer.  This is what you need to help you out of the bad luck streak regarding the storms and damage you guys have endured.  Congrats once again.

tree- neat looking dog. i think most dogs can be taught to blood trail if they have a good nose. i've seen many 'un-trained' dogs find deer

congrats again

Congrats on the fresh venison, Treefarmer.  Don't fret about the size of the rack, we all have shot small ones one time or another.   In one way or another, they are all trophies.

Same problem here but have had better luck keeping the big bucks safe . there is a 400 acres of swamp next to the cousins farm that they go and hide from the public hunters and we have 40 acres of woods that are off limits 9 months of the year . They all eat the same congrats on the buck .  --09--0 ##$%#116

I suppose if we didn't shoot anything but wall hangers we'd all be a lot skinnier - looks like you got some good groceries there Tree, nothing wrong with that particularly when your neighboring hunters aren't willing to let the smaller ones grow up anyway.

Congratulations on a fine looking deer! No need to apologize at all! I'm like you, I like the big antlers with all the bragging right but in the end, I want a nice hunt and meat in the freezer! He is going to taste just fine!!
