First Squirrel Hunt
« on: December 03, 2018, 11:08:03 AM »
I took my 7 year old grandson, Jake, on his first squirrel hunt yesterday afternoon. Bugfixer and his son Kyle was going along too. We had some stands to get out of this property and when finished, was going to squirrel hunt for a couple of hours. Jake did a little practice shooting with his 22 bolt before we left but he didnt do well. Great on safety, just wasnt hitting his mark. I decided we would still go just for the experience and more safety training.

The wind was whipping when we got there so my expectations were not very high. However, after sitting for about 10 minutes we heard some squirrels barking nearby. We eased down the trail and got our first sight of 2 squirrels chasing each other around. Jake got ready and I had him hold off until they got a little closer as they were coming our way. The bigger of them jumped up on a downed tree and Jake said, "I'm taking the shot!". I about cracked up but managed to keep a straight face. He was in sniper mode. He took the shot and the squirrel jumped up a tree with the other smaller one chasing after. The smaller one jumped trees and we both shot and missed. Then he went back to the original tree and i shot and dropped him. Jake had no shot. Instead of going and getting the squirrel, we let him lie and went after 2 more that were barking. As we were easing away, I heard something hit the leaves but neither of us could tell what it was. We chased the other squirrels all around a tree with Jake working that bolt action like a German sniper. I was beaming inside at his determination and safety practices.. Neither of us were hitting anything.. LOL

After we finally lost those squirrels, we ambled back to pick up the one I killed but as we got to the base of the tree, low and behold there was 2 dead squirrels  on the ground, side by side. Jake had killed the first squirrel! He had shot him good but I guess he took a few minutes to die. That was what we heard hit the ground.

So Jake had his first squirrel. I explained to him that he was now officially a hunter and had joined a huge brotherhood of hunters all over the world. He was super proud but I think I was prouder...

His birthday is the 15th. He will be 8 years old. I'm going to a gun shop today to order him his first shotgun...

I ended up buying the Mossberg 500 Bantam in 410. vent rib, little longer barrel and full choke. the length of pull is a little longer but I think it will make him a good gun for squirrel, birds and turkey. it was alos $30 cheaper and they had it in stock. I will give it to him this weekend and weather permitting, we will go blast some squirrels.

Awesome story congrats to you and Jake. That will be the start of a fine hunting companion for years to come. He'll love the .410. I remember my first shotgun was a 410 when I was 8 years old. Your story put a big smile on my face... @--0--0133
