Live woodchucks don't like dead woodchucks in their den
« on: August 13, 2018, 05:45:55 PM »
About a week ago, I had a shot at a woodchuck.  Spotted it by the garden, and tried an approach from a different direction.  When I got to the desired location, the woodchuck was nowhere in sight.  Having nothing to lose, I thought I would take a look closer to tje den. As I was peering through the brush, I saw the chuck at the mouth of the den.  I quickly raised my rifle, put the crosshairs on its shoulder and squeezed the trigger. I expected the chuck to drop right there, but it was gone.  Looked down into the den, and could only see about 2-3 ft down, then it curved.  No sign of a hit, either.  Later, I thought I should have aimed a little higher, since I was shooting from about 15 ft away.  Well, today I was dumping some brush out back and decided to check the den for signs of possible activity.  There was a very dead and decomposed woodchuck, about 3 ft from the den.  Apparently somebody didn't like the dead chuck stinking up the place.  That also indicates that there is another possible target.  That dead chuck raises my total to 10 chucks for the year.

Louie - Is it safe to assume as new woodchucks come on your property they are using existing holes/dens or are they digging new ones every time?  Because that could be a lot of holes if they are digging new ones each time.  Nice shooting by the way!

Ben, they appear to be using existing dens or runs.  Used to be 5. holes I knew about.  One was closed when the new barn came in.  Another one, I filled in with tree branches and rocks.  A third one, doesn't seem to be active at all.  Have not seen any activity on the 4th one.  They only one that has had any activity is where I found the dead chuck.  Sometimes, the chucks seem to make their way from the neighbor.

We're still trying to figure out how many chucks Louie can chuck in a summer.  He's blown by last year's tally I believe, the only question is how many more?
