Wife forced me to upgrade...
« on: August 06, 2018, 10:28:08 AM »
Well...after bushogging the new place and determining the land is not suitable for a two wheel drive tractor, the wife convinced me to upgrade to a 4WD.  I really hated getting rid of the JD 4440 because I liked the way it looked with duals, it easy to work on and was less "computerized".  However, when I sat in the new 6140 (140 HP) I was blown away.  I've been in newer tractors before and rode around in them, but have never owned one.  This baby is going to make bushhogging fun!  (I kept the 15' batwing.)

HM - $60K (minus the trade-in)
Yari - Oh yes it has A/C.  Plus it has an air ride seat, a buddy seat and hydraulics for a grapple.

what year is it?

with all those features i expect some eye popping plots. you got yourself a big boy tractor there. what will your minimum plot size be w/ that size tractor?

nice work. it's a dandy

Wow,  Congratulations!
That is a fine one! Loader and an A/C, all a feller needs for a fine food plot.  What kind of tillage equipment will you use?  I bet you could handle a mighty big rototiller behind that one!  Many years ago there was a big rototiller type machine advertised in the Florida Cattleman magazine called a Ground Hawg.  They claimed it would pulverize anything in the woods including stumps. ##$%#1119 It required at least a 100 hp to provide a finished seed bed with one sloooow pass!

Nice upgrade Ben, that will spoil you for sure.  Between the extra axle pulling and that loader you'll be able stay out of most of the jams (or as my Dad always said, get seriously buried in the muck)!
Enjoy it!

Mad - I hope so.  I already had to get a backhoe out here to pull the 2WD out of the muck once.

Yari & Treefarmer - This baby is going to be used primarily for bushhogging 100 acres of sandy/hilly terrain.  My food plots are still going to be put in with the wife's Kioti (4WD/55HP).  I've already mowed and sprayed.  This weekend I will rip with 7 shank spring tooth harrow then use a 6' reverse tine rototiller.  I have limited flat areas so I am putting in a couple of 1/2 acre plots and one full acre plot.  I would love to see that piece of equipment Treefarmer mentioned!

What Tree mentioned sounds like what we have in our Forestry lineup called a "site prep tractor".  I got to see one in operation a few years ago and am still drooling.  It's a self propelled unit with a big mulching head on the front (think rototiller on mega steroids) that you basically just drive in wherever you want to clear a road or landing pad.  Amazing to watch one in action and see what it can eat and the clear trail it leaves behind.  We all need one, here's a video link.
