Deer in the City!
« on: June 23, 2018, 11:52:31 AM »
Moved my nephew down to Timonium, MD yesterday. That is right next to Baltimore, MD and a very, very congested and business environment. Lots of upscale strip malls, auto dealerships, lots and lots of huge apartment complexes and cars everywhere! His apartment complex is situated with woods behind and on the one side of him.  My nephew and I decided to go round back just to see what the woods were like. There, not 20 yards from us, was an 8 point buck in velvet just staring at us! He leaped a few jumps and was about 35-40 yards in the woods where we could see him and just began to feed on the browse. I know deer live in the cities like this but how in the world do they get in these woods in the first place? Did the city build around the woods and the deer just stayed as long as no one bothers them? I was just amazed at his health and rack. Pretty cool though!!

BC - Those deer can get pretty fat and old in the city - their main threat is the traffic but aside from that it's a very hospitable place for them.  They need some little pockets of cover to hold up in, but at night it's game on in all of the suburban yards and around those nicely landscaped businesses - they feast on things like hostas & many other ornamentals.

Yep, Madgomer hit the nail on the head.  I bet the homeowners with beautiful landscaping hate them.

city bucks are some of the biggest bucks you will find. the city hunts around here show some monsters. unfortunately, the head of the organization takes all the best areas along w/ his buddies. it should be a draw IMO. people are sooooo greedy

Every year the biggest deer in GA are killed in and around Atlanta.  Not around agg fields like you would think.
