Varmint challenge entry
« on: June 10, 2018, 08:03:52 PM »
Spotted a woodchuck over by the barn this afternoon, after coming in from taking some stuff out of my truck.  Went and got my Axis, and went out the front door, to my best shooting spot by the side of the garage.  A 90 gal herby curby makes a good res minutt.  The chuck was no longer out in the open, but I knew it was a matter of time before it showed itself.  A few minutes later, I spotted it going north towards the neighbors.  Then, a loud car happened to go by and sent the chuck running back behind the barn.  A few minutes later, it emerged and gave me a shot.  The 223 did a great job, although a bit messy.  I think I need to work on a milder load, if I want meat for the pot.

Another one bites the dust, well done Louie!

I think you've posted this before but I can't remember - what load are you shooting currently through your Axis?

Roger, I'm using a 55gr hp, and 748 powder.  Published speed is 2900 fps, which is a little hot, imo.

Witj you guys building me up, I don't have to talk trash.  I didn't win last year's varmint championship.  It was the year before.

Hmmm, I'm not going to argue with success, you're putting the hurt on them for sure.  With a bolt gun and good barrel length I'd expect you could push that 55 grain pill over 3200 if you feel the need for more speed.

Most of my 55gr pills go 3250 or more , you may try some 40gr pills they will blowup on impact , I use those in my Encore with a 26" barrel , they are about 3600 fps but no exit hole most of the time .  ##$%#1118
