Two for Two on Woodie Hatches
« on: May 31, 2018, 09:13:58 PM »
This morning at breakfast saw what looked like a strange shaped duck swimming across the pond behind the house.  Grabbed the binos & quickly realized it's a woodie hen with her newly hatched chicks.  She came across the pond from the nesting box, then she & the little fuzzy buggers crawled up the dam, went into the grass, and headed for the woods.  Not sure if she'll take them into the creek in the woods & raise them there or ??  Last year similar deal - I saw the ducklings for about 30 seconds as momma took them to the bank, then never saw them again all year.  Have never witnessed woodies up close like this so don't know if it's normal or not.  The corner of the pond where the nesting box is has a lot of brush & a weedy shoreline, was assuming they'd like that for raising the little ones but apparently still too much noise & action around the house, plus snapping turtles & herons & stuff hanging around the pond??

Either way, excited to have raised at least two groups of woodies since I put the box up last spring - lots of fun to watch them.

they are one of my favorite ducks. I have a nesting pair of mallards on my pond this year. I was surprised the geese didn't take it over like last year

I don't know where they raise them? I would think out of water would be tough

Always good to see your work pay off and Woodies are always great to see. Maybe she will be back for a Photo shoot.
