Holly Molly.......
« on: May 31, 2018, 08:15:10 PM »
We have several types of rattle snakes in Georgia and I've seen some huge Eastern Diamondback here but I've never ran across a Timber rattler this huge. The guys calls him a leg breaker, I'd call him a heart attack in the making. If I ran up on something like this in the woods..... @--0--0127  @--0--0127  @--0--0127

Yep, there would be less concern about my leg than my ticker if I came up on that dude.  Impressed that he had the presence of mind to call the DNR first - I'm a chop first, ask questions later person when it comes to snakes, and honestly I would not care if it was the last rattler on the planet, he'd be done (or I'd just be dead of a heart attack).

That is some GOOD eating.     ##$%#111
We had more eastern diamondback rattlesnakes than timber at Dare County Bombing/Gunnery Range, Stumpy Point NC.  ECU (East Carolina University) would come out to trap them and kept getting eastern diamondback.  Guess the Eastern was eating the Timbers.  We had to call game wardens when we found a dead Gator, were protected then.
With my wife and kids there and in my yard, do not know if I would have taken the time to make a phone call.

I guess I'm too old school to understand laws protecting deadly snakes.  If you have to call the DNR, game commission or 911 to get permission to kill a snake, it might not be there by the time you clear away the red tape.  The snake will be in somebody else's flower bed or what ever and bite some other child or pet.
A week or so ago one of our sisters-in-law was bit by a copperhead while working in a flower bed, she lives in Blairsville, Ga. She's doing well but had a swollen hand for a while. Didn't have to receive anti-venom but did some treatment in the hyperbaric chamber. @--0--0117
We only have the little ground rattlers and the Eastern Diamondbacks in Florida as far as I know.  We also have Coral snakes and Cottonmouth Moccasins and probably umpteen other non-venomous snakes.  Oak snakes, black snakes and such, all get a reprieve unless they are on the porch.
Being as old as I am and having been in the woods most of my life, I've killed a pile of snakes and am not one bit remorseful.
Here's a picture made in the early 60's, before high school graduation, of just one of the many.

Edit:  When the picture was blown up, I noticed the is a "heartback" a female.  Males have diamonds  point to point and the females have the heart pattern.

Treefarmer - Cool information on the hearts or diamonds on their backs.  I never knew that bit of trivia.

During out rattlesnake hunts here in PA, all snakes captured are measured, weighed, venom captured and then must be returned to the capture site.
