A little late in posting
« on: May 21, 2018, 07:55:09 PM »
As the title indicates, I'm a little late in posting my 3rd woodchuck kill of this year.  Last friday, while taking a short lunch break from working on the breezeway, I spotted a woodchuck, just peeking from behind the ramp to the barn. After a while, it came out in the open.  I went to get my Axis, but something spooked the chuck and it went into hiding.  A while later, the woodchuck was peeking out, by the other end of the barn.  Didn't have a clear shot then, but a few minutes later, the chuck was out in the open.  I lined up the crosshairs, squeezed the trigger, and my 3rd chuck of the year was down! I really like my Axis rifle, light, easy to handle, and very accurate.

Congrats Louie - you're on pace for a record breaking chuck-chucking year!    I did a double take when I first looked at the picture you posted (maybe I need to upgrade this old computer for something with better resolution) - looks like a little arm reaching out from the belly of the chuck to grab your scope.  Or maybe I just need to go get some sleep!

Wow Louie, you are definitely going to be the top contender for the varmint challenge this year (unless you kill all of them before June 1  --099-780).  Nice shooting.  What caliber is the Axis again?

Ben, my Axis is chambered for .223. Rifling twist is 1-9.  I'm using 55 gr hp bullets.  Don't know the brand, got them with a bunch of other stuff. Have not tried heavier bullets.  Using 748 powder.  Love the way that stuff goes through my powder measure.  Scope is an old Bushnell 3x9x40,  that was originally used on my 12 ga 870.  I removed it cuz it was not holding zero and sent it to Bushnell.  They said it had been over centered, whatever that means.  They readjusted it and returned it to me.  I tried it on my 45LC Henry, and it worked just fine, but I didn't care how it looked on the Henry, so I swapped for an old El Paso Weaver K3.  It just looks more at home on the Henry.  BTW, I have a 40 yr old Weaver K 2.5 on the 870 and is holding up very well.

Nothing like taking a woodchuck on break. I'm not sure he wasn't thinking the same thing though. Keep after them with that great shooting.

Louie my friend I hope you didn't peak to soon. I was hoping to give you run for the varmint competition this year. Hope you have more Chucks and other varmints to put to bed.
