Now, tell us the story

Our Michigan opener was a bust for me.  Only heard one single gobble all morning, although I did see a tom strutting in an open field.  Just couldn't get him to come in close enough.  Tuesday was a little better, as there were two toms strutting in the same open field as on Monday, but again, I was unable to get them to come in close, and eventually they left.  I "think" I was able to get them to return to the field, as they continued to gobble and I was answering them.  Unfortunately, they came out even farther away, and eventually, they veered off to the woods to the north of me.  I skipped hunting on Wednesday, as I had some obligations to fulfill.  This morning, there was more gobbling, from different directions, I could detect two different toms gobbling from two different locations.  I chose to return to the same field I hunted on Monday and Tuesday, after all, that is where I was seeing birds.  I decided to sit at the foot ofthe same stump where I had sat on Tuesday, and began calling to the toms that seemed to be to the west of me.  They gobbled three or four times, before I saw one bird pitch down.  There was a bit of a rise between me and where the bird landed.  Had no idea where the bird went, and then things got really quiet.  No gobbling at all for about 15 minutes (guessing at the time)  Anyway, after a while, I heard some gobbling but sounded as if the birds were moving away.  I didn't call back.  Then, a second gobble, and it sounded like they were staying put.  I decided to answer, and a little while later, they gobbled again, and it was closer.  This continued for a bit, each time they got closer.  Then, I spotted some movement out on the field.  when I was able to confirm it was a tom, I continued to answer their calls, but more softly.  When they reached a spot about 75 yds away, I just put the call down, and started getting ready for a shot.  I did have to call softly one more time, when it seemed the tom was about to veer away.  At my call, he turned towards me and began a very slow walk towards me.  I kept looking for a clear spot that would offer a clean unobstructed shot.  there was some slight brush between us.  Eventually, he came to a spot that was close enough but not clear enough.  He took a few steps to his right, and I raised myself a bit, I felt I had a clear shot, and I pulled the trigger.  He flopped right down, and I was one happy ole boy.  Jumped up and ran towards him and I saw he had been with two other toms, not just one as I had originally thought.  after he stopped flopping around, I paced off the distance, and it was 37 long steps.  I figured this bird is 1-2 years old, but turns out to be my heaviest bird so far.  When I weighed him at home, the scale stopped at 23-3/4 lbs. which was very pleasing to me.  First person I texted was my wife.  After taking a pic, I texted my daughter, and some friends. It was an exciting hunt, it was neat how it developed, and of course, the ending was great.  Well, the first ending was great, but there was some hard work coming.  to begin with, I had to walk a little more than half a mile, just to get to my truck.  That 23lb bird got heavy!  Had to stop a couple of times to switch hands, and so forth.  I did get to share my hunt with a guy who owns some land next to the property where I had been hunting.  He came out wearing shorts and a teeshirt, and it was like 40 degrees out!  I will have to add pics later, it's getting late and I've been up since 4 am.

Had a rough time resizing the pics, when I tried to upload them to TH, I got a dialog box saying Internet Explorer had blocked a pop-up.  Could get around that, very confusing as I use Firefox as my browser.  So, I emailed the pics to myself, so maybe I can upload them from my phone.  Sorry no beard or spurs pics.

Way to go Louie!  Persistence pays off for sure.  That picture with the bird on the stump is really cool.

Roger, that was the stump I was sitting by, when I shot him.

Beautiful bird, thanks for the pics.

And thanks for properly affixing the tag, talkjng to a CO friend, an amazing number of people just stick it directly to the leg which makes it impossible for them to read.

Nice bird and great adventure. It's amazing how much heavier 23lbs gets when you have to walk a long way.
