MiB's Surf and Turf Road Trip
« on: April 21, 2018, 02:24:13 PM »
It was kind of a last minute decision but after leaving WalleyeBlast I headed straight to Kentucky to do I little turkey hunting with HuntMaster and Bugfixer.

I had been talking to HM a lot after my dad died and he said why not just come down for a few days.   This time I finally took him up on it.

I got there in the evening on Wednesday and was up a by 3am and in the woods before light the next day.    We hunted for several hours and never heard a gobble.   We did however catch some birds flying down behind us, we probably set up too close to where they were roosting...which is not where we would have ever expected birds to be roosting. On the way back we stopped by another location where we could see several birds up over a hill.   We tried to sneak in on them but they wandered back into the woods before we could connect.

Friday morning I hit the woods with Bugfixer.  We heard several birds hammering at dawn but nothing would come our way.

Friday night HM and I returned to the same place Bug and I hunted earlier to try and see where these birds were roosting.   We worked our way in quiet and just sat there in a small wooded area between two fields  trying to do some recon work when we heard a cluck close behind us.  HM hit the call and a gobbler thundered back at us.  We were scrambling to turn around so we would be ready.   It all went quit and we though we had been busted when all of a sudden we could here some leaves rustling.   HM saw them before I could and all I could hear as they came in was HM whispering "shoot em...shoot em...shoot em.."    There were two and they came in all worked up.  I got a glimpse of them before they turned and walked behind the roots of a blown over tree.   As soon as they came out the other side I shot and knocked the lead bird over like a sack of laundry.    The second bird jump and rand down the hill.     HM was doing the calling and working a fan and by the time we realized there were two it was too late to go for the double. It also didn't help that after I shot I jumped up and ran towards downed the bird.  At the time all I was thinking was "don't let him get back up and run away!"   I was told after the fact that I got up amazingly fast for a big guy.  That's what turkey fever will do to you. LOL

I will say HM's level of  excitement after calling in and killing a turkey is an experience in and of itself.

We might not have pulled off the double but we bagged a late afternoon bird which was AWESOME!!

The turkey had a 10 1/8" beard and weighed about 18 pounds.

This was my first out of state turkey hunt and the first time really working as a team with another hunter to bag a bird.

So far it's been a great time hunting with HM and Bugfixer.    Learned a lot about hunting down here, it's quite different than the property I hunt on back in MI. Down here it's a lot of run and gun, where I hunt it's a lot of blind sitting and ambushing. I will also never complain about another "hill" in MI.  The "flat" ground here is steeper than the hills back home.  Those few days rocking on the boat in lake Erie helped prep my legs for hunting here.

And like everything I have ever done with fellow TH people the company and hospitality is worth more then the game taken.

Still have a little time left here and another tag to fill.....

My season back in MI doesn't start until May 7th.  I opted for the late season this year because the weather has been so flaky.

Congrats on your Kentucky bird, Mike!  My MI season starts tomorrow morning, I'll be hunting with my team of me, myself and I.  Hopefully, we can bring back a good story.

That was an awesome hunt for you, I'm glad it worked out better than the walleyeblast, and sorry we didn't get to spend more time together while we were there.

Congrats guys.

HM told me right off that we leave no survivors and no mercy and If I don't shoot he will.

HM and Bugfixer went out of their way to show me the lay of the land, educate me in their style of hunting and welcome me to their camp.

Thanks again guys!!

Hunted with TH guys in KY back in 2012 for Deer, which HM and Bugfixer were among that group.  They tried their hardest to put me on a buck and I did see some young ones.

They are GREAT Guys!    @--0--0119

Congrats on a Fine KY Bird!    ##$%#11
