99 grains of powder in that Lapua is impressive - that's about like pulling the trigger on 4 .223 cases all at one time.  I'm definitely in the minor leagues!

I have two different loads worked up for my 338LM 285 gr pills get pushed with VihtaVuori N570 and the 300 gr gets a tickle with Hodgdon US869. Not going to give the recipe or load density because of safety concerns. The 285 is taking off at 3255 and the 300 is 3190.

LongDoc's (338/378 WBY) 300 gr pills are powered by RL33 and trot out the mouth at 4120. This is the gun I built for 2000+ shooting. BTW it recently cut a dingo in half at 1600.

If you want a real powder budget buster load a 20mm. 800 gr pill and 12 rounds loaded just about wipes out a pound of powder. Like the TV show Big Bang Theory. OOOO What a great name for the Anzio... BBT It's my new squirrel gun. I just take the whole darn tree down.  --09--0  --099-780

The 338LM has a larger case capacity than any 300 or regular 338 the exception is the 338/378 WBY which has about 10% more capacity than the Lapua. There's a new 338 soon to hit the market with a lower shoulder angle than anything out there right now. A small increase in capacity over the Lapua. It shouldn't be as hard on the necks as the WBY but just a little better than the Lapua

Beware of the long range disease. Very addictive.

Hmmm, a 300 gr pill cruising at 4120 fps, sounds pretty wicked, especially if it's able to nail dogs at the better part of a mile out.  Yikes!

Thanks for all the comments about the 338 Lapua....yes Dutch is right, long distance can be very addictive....Several guys have shot the 338 Lapua and it isn't as bad as you might think....but yes it takes a lot of powder for the 338/378 Weatherby, the 300 Rem Ultra. I have a couple of 7mm STW that take about 70 to 72 gns of powder....amazing...now that one kicks...no muzzle breake on either of them...ouch!! I also own two Jap made 300 Wea Mag and you are right, it is a big shell!!

Yes a bullet going 4100+ FPS if think about it, it blows your mind, but to have a 300 gn go that that fast in incredible....

I'm with you.  I won't say I'm recoil shy but the older I get the more I wish to avoid it.
