First kill with my Axis
« on: March 21, 2018, 06:18:56 AM »
Spotted a woodchuck out by the barn last Sunday.  Can't recall seeing a woodchuck out this early in the year.  Anyway, by the time I got the Axis out, and loaded, the chuck was gone.  Kept an eye out and yesterday afternoon, it appeared again.  this time, I was ready, as I had already left the Axis in a more accessible location.  All I had to do is throw a jacket on, and put on my boots.  The chuck was out by the barn again, with most of its head sticking above the ramp leading to the barn.  Centered the crosshairs on the head, and squeezed one off.  Now, mind you, I had not fully gotten the scope dialed in yet, just barely had time to get a group to hit my aiming point, at 30 yds.  I hit the chuck, and it started jumping all over.  I had barely creased the top of its head.  1/4" lower and it would have been DRT.  Shot him a 2nd time, from about 1' away.  I put the Talkhunting tag but I know the championship doesn't start till June 1st.  Even though I have shot .223 rounds before, I can fully appreciate why folks would want to use a suppressor.

We need to get some little chuck stickers for Louie to put on his stock to signify each groundhog he's taken out with that gun - my guess based on past trends is he'll be an ace by the time them little buggers go back to hibernation (if any are left).
