Why Can't We All Just Get Along?
« on: March 10, 2018, 07:00:43 PM »
Had some fun watching the critters behind the house tonight.  A pair of Canadians dropped into the pond at about 4 and were just doing their thing, then an hour later 5 deer came out of the woods and started feeding their way up the hill towards the pond.  By that point the geese were down at that end standing on the bank, and when the lead doe poked her head up over the crest of the hill those two geese sounded off & were apparently not ready to share their "safe space".  After about 30 seconds of that, the geese took flight with a pretty good ruckus and all 5 deer raised their tails & scrambled back to the woods.  It took about an hour & the deer came back again, this time their feathered friends weren't there to harass them.  I'm guessing the geese must be staking their claim to a nesting site?  Haven't seen that kind of behavior between the critters before.

yep. it is fun to watch wild critters go at it. i've seen beavers slap at deer to. geese will always push their luck. they are possessive critters. they came after emily once and i almost broke my foot when i cut them off and punted one into orbit. man that hurt

enjoy the pond. spring will be an active time

Yep, we are seeing and hearing tons of geese right now.  A couple landed on my pond yesterday too.

I haven't seen any woodies yet this year PJ, but had quite a few dropping in last spring, might just be a little early here.  Had a pair of hooded mergansers last week and then a pair of mallards this morning, but aside from that just Canadians so far.

Saw two Toms strutting in a pasture yesterday in the rain. Spring has arrived here as we have several things in full bloom. The dogwood are stating to bloom and the fish are biting. We've got a couple of cold days this week and the weather will get back in the high 60's and 70's. The water temperature is between 56 and 58 degrees...time to be on the water.

probably claiming their spot...close to nesting time..the river is open behind our house now and everyday there is about a dozen challenging each other as we have cleared and seeded grass right to the river and unfortunately they love that...they are dirty when they stick around and multiply very quickly..nice to see...but...

Yeah Gander, they can definitely mess up the place.  We used to get 20-30 at a time on the little pond at our old place (before we got the dog) - wouldn't be so bad if they stayed on the pond but we'd come home & find them and their "leftovers" all over the driveway & sidewalk.

Had a beautiful pair of Buffleheads on the pond tonight - I think that's the first time I've seen them here.

Had my first wood duck for the year on the pond tonight - a lone drake.  Hopefully he can find himself a girlfriend & let her check out the nest we have waiting for her.

Don't have any fishers down here, but those other three plus the snapping turtles will certainly be interested once the chicks arrive.  Have a guy lined up to take the snappers as I catch them, so should be able to at least reduce that threat.  Can't do much about the hawks & owls.

i had to quit putting out boxes at the cabin. the critters all figured out they are food. all my houses a couple years ago had hen feathers outside them. some had eaten eggs and others had eggs rotting. i figured i was putting a target on my woodies, so i won't put any more out. pretty sad. it was always fun helping woodies

the price you pay for being in the middle of nowhere. it's a wild place

good luck w/ the turtles. you should cook them yourself. they are good
