Turkey broadhead suggestions for crossbow?
« on: February 25, 2018, 10:38:21 PM »
Thinking about taking my crossbow this spring for turkey season instead of the scattergun.  Anyone have any favorite broadheads that perform well out of a crossbow??

Mu son and I have shot 5 or 6 birds now with both crossbow and compound and we have used the rage heads. Not the turkey ones, just what we use for deer hunting. No loss birds to date.

I think there is a broadhead called the guillotine, but not sure if it is for crossbows? Check it out on youtube...pretty crazy.

Use the same you use for deer.

I like the Grim Reaper broadbeads or the Ramcats if you prefer fixed blade.

I prefer a body shot with a bow over trying to sever the head.

Thanks All.  MI-B - the idea of lopping their heads off seems like a winner on the surface, but when you think about how quickly they can jerk that thing around it seems like a fairly risky shot unless he's right on top of you.  I would expect to go for the body unless I had something like a bird behind a log with nothing but head & neck to shoot at.  Had that very situation on my first tom, about 10-15' in front of me.  Yeah, I missed him with the scattergun!  I at least take some joy in the fact that his ears had to be ringing for a long time.

I'm a Grim Reaper guy too - they have never let me down on a deer.

If you do take out the X-bow I would recommend taking the shot when the bird is facing start away from you if he offers it. Aim right in the middle of the back and you good to go. If broadside make sure you know your aiming points as the bird round puffed up tom can be misleading on where to aim for the vitals. Bow is so much fun to go with so I hope you give it a try and good luck.

as ligpd said shot placement is the key if they don't see it coming  --7-8-9...other than that use what you know works with your bow...personally I use Muzzys...

Appreciate all of the input guys, exactly what I needed.  My first time turkey hunting I was determined to do it with my bow so studied up a lot on shot placement, so feel pretty good about that although I never got within range to try it on a real bird.  That was back in the days when most of the archery turkey guys were recommending the use of a string tracker - - that's a product I don't even see for sale any more.  After 20 or more years of shooting them with a scattergun I expect my biggest challenge will be remembering not to shoot for the neck.
