Warm Weather Affecting the Turkeys?
« on: February 19, 2018, 06:46:46 AM »
Here in East Tennessee it is going to be in the 70's all week long...will go to the range sometimes this week. Was wondering if this warm weather spell we are having will cause the Turkeys to chase sooner? I personally cannot wait to head South on the 23rd for the season opener on the 24th of March....

Will go to the range this week with the shotguns and begin to check them out......

I sure hope not, our season doesn't start until May, which is late to start with anyway. If it gets any later we will change it to summer gobbler season  ##$%#1119

I remember one year probably 20 years ago, I was working in Elizabethtown, KY and on the way up and down would pass these big open fields and it happen to be a very warm Jan and Feb...and I would head home on Thursday around 4 PM would head back to TN...saw plenty of Gobblers strutting their stuff in front of plenty of hens....so I was just wondering...sure would be nice if they would wait on us....LOL.... -0078

I have spoken to  DNR officer here who is the son of a wildlife biologist. He swears up and down that the turkeys breading habits are unaffected by the temps and will correspond to the calander. Their feeding and travel habits are more closely affected by the weather and availability of food sources.

Either way, I seem to have less action when we have a early thaw/warm weather.

I use to think it does living here in NH for 20yrs this April but now I don't. However, I'm just a turkey killin junkie and not a turkey biologist. They are begining to strut, gobble and sort out their pecking order up here in NH which they always do this time or the year and I have no worries come May.

My only concern with an early spring is the woods filling out and trees budding early. I have several reasons I've observed over the years for that and not one of them has to do with breeding or chasing early.

As the season goes on and temps rise, I noticed a drop in activity. Likely due to hens nesting, towards the end of the season some Toms wander in search of the hen they think they missed.
My best Tom, ever, in my picture on the forum, was the first week of opening season. It rained Friday before the opener then through Sunday and anyone I knew did not even see a bird. I got mine on the early part of the week after things dried off.
