They still gather around the trace mineral salt block in cold weather.

Years ago, I used to put salt blocks out, when it was legal to do so.  Later, the state made it illegal, so I stopped putting salt out.   Found out the deer were still coming in to the same spot long after the block was gone. They would dig down into the clay soil to get at the salt.  Where they had dug down, these holes would fill up with rain water, which apparently turned salty.  Made it much easier to get the salt the deer craved.  I eventually filled in the holes.  The state has made it legal again, to put salt out.  Last fall, I put out a block, but I have not seen much activity around it.

Louie - once they've found it, they'll be back.  Have seen some pretty big holes in the ground left by the deer after the salt was no longer visible.  Not legal in IL but quite a bit of it ends up out in the woods anyway, they'll paw at those spots for at least a year after the block is gone.

I have had trophy rocks out for 5 years and you should see the hole they dig in winter to get at the salt that soaked into the earth during the summer .  ##$%#1118

We've been putting out salt blocks for years. Have some holes dug the size of the beds of pickup trucks. They like their salt for sure.
