Some deer video from tonight's hunt.
« on: January 01, 2018, 07:01:43 PM »
I hunted the last day of our 2017-18 deer season today and the deer were coming out of the woods like crazy.   By the time shooting hours were up there were over 50 deer in the field.  All were to far out for me to shoot, 300+ yards.    Only one wanderred close (200 yards) and it was a baby right at dark so I let her walk.

Can't really make them out in the video but there were two nice racks in the mix and a few smaller bucks.   Good to know there are some nice ones left for next year.

Looks like about 24 deer...seeing them is a lot of fun to me. Must be something good in that field.

That's probably right at the time I videoed them.    Seems like as the night went on groups of 2-4 would just wander in from every direction.   By dark is was a feeding frenzy!!!!!    --099-780

The field is leased and this year they planted beans.    If he follows his normal rotation, it will be corn next year but I never know til the crops come up.

I really can't move my blind any closer.    The little grassy area down in from is a swamp and is full of water except for when it'
s frozen.   Also I am not the only one that hunts this farm so I am kind of locked in to where I am for deer season.  Though now  that it is frozen I could have probably put a pop up blind down there, it would be hard to get to undetected though.

Tonight the deer were already in the field when I got there.   I came into by blind from the woods behind it so I was able to sneak in undetected.

From what I have heard the 450BM can take deer out to about 300 yards but I have not had the opportunity to actually shoot it that far or analyze the energy at that distance.     Right now 200 is my max ethical range where I am confident I can make the kill.

I think next year I may just try harder to fill my tags earlier when its warmer.   I let a few walk this year I probably should not have.  I always do that then regret it later.  DOH!

I have one in the freezer and a lot of summer sausage left from last years deer so I am not hurting for any.

A little warmer is the way to go. I slept through the speed chat last evening just like I did on New Years, slept through that event also.  --099-780

I'm well rested for now, just waiting for nap time to roll around.

That would be quite a sight if you dropped the hammer on one, a heck of a stampede!  Were the big boys focused on eating or still tending to their ladies?

Just eating.  Funny they were all on one side of the field until the big one came out then they all migrated over to his side of the field and pretty much went wherever he did.
