I hunt a open field and manage to shoot a deer in a swamp.

Had 2 does come in. I saw then from far acress the field but they turned and slowly fed their way to the swampy area down in the corner. The bigger one stopped and gave me a perfect broadside shot at 177 yards. I took it, the deer made a huge jump so I knew I had hit her.

It took me around 25 minutes to work my way down there, picking up about 50 pounds of clay along the way. The swail is all grass and water, up to 1 foot deer given all the rain.

I found where I thought she was when I shot and found not a hair or drop of blood. I zig zagged through the swamp for over an hour. Its not that big!!  I even followed evey visible deer trail back out to the field or woods looking for some sign....nothing.  I finally decide to head back and regroup.

Not wanting to walk the field again I pick what looks like the best trail up through the wooded section.  About 40 yards up I find her right on the trail. I hit her high and she never bled out a drop that I could see.

It was just dumb luck that I found her.  The 450 did an awesome job, she just bled internally.

This is a good 200 yard+ deer gun.

My buddies brother was in hunting from AZ and has yet to tag one so I let him take it so he has some venison to take home.  He is leaving Friday and I can hunt til Jan 1.

Nice job, being persistent on looking for your doe.  Sounds like I should have gotten a rifle in 450BM, instead of the Henry 45LC.  In my property, I could shot as far as 140 yds.  no way I could make an effective shot at that distance with the 45LC.

Congratulations on the deer! Great shooting! And kudos for sticking with the looking part. Some hunters would have given up and wasted the life of a deer. You did good, congrats on that

Great work MIB,  it's not always easy.  What did you end up putting on that rifle for sights?

Yes, this one is an AR.    I built this one myself, here's the thread : http://www.talkhuntin.com/index.php?topic=45165.45 (Sorry some of the early pictures are missing due to Photobucket changing their linking policy).   They are also available in The Ruger American bolt action and a CVA single shot as well as a few other makers I believe.  There are even a few gunsmiths making barrels for the TC Encore.

They now allow them to be used in the "Shotgun" zone here in MI so I opted to use one because I hunt a field where the added range is a real plus.  It is ungodly loud even without a compensator on it.   When using it I hunt with my electronic muffs on, which also help keep my ears warm; I'm at the end of the field that gets all the wind.

Great work MIB,  it's not always easy.  What did you end up putting on that rifle for sights?

I've got a Bushnell 3-9 scope on it.   I really do not like a lot of magnifications, just enough to see the animal and get the cross-hairs on it.    Even at 177 yards I don't think I had it above abut 4-5 power (I'll have to check and see where I left it after the shot.)  I always feel I shoot a little better when i am not zoomed in to close where I can see all the vibration and movement.
