Leader of the sounder group down!
« on: July 25, 2017, 06:20:04 AM »
I have been chasing a group of 8 for about two weeks.  They are always too far for a shot or they get into the woods before light.  This morning was different.  There was plenty of daylight and they were in the center of the field about 350 yards from the house.  I picked the largest sow and squeezed the trigger on the 7mm Mag.  They all bolted the opposite way except this sow, she ran diagonal across the field so I shot again, another miss.  She continued on her same diagonal path and paused again.  The third shot dropped her in her tracks.  The wife was watching with binoculars and immediately said, "you hit her in the head".  Sure enough when we got to her, blood was all over her head and on the ground.  The shot was about 350 yards (my longest to date).  This makes number 8 over the past month or so.  I am so happy to have finally killed a sow.  Her bags were full as I am sure she was feeding some and probably had more on the way.

Nice shooting

Taking the sow will put a small dent in the population.

Keep the pressure on them.

nice shooting!  I don't think i could make a shot that far.  Methinks the sow should go into the freezer

Well done Ben!  I think you need to start suggesting to your lovely bride that a .50 BMG or .338 Lapua is the best tool for the job since those piggies are getting wise & putting more distance between you.

Just curious - how bad are they tearing up your beans?

Mad - They are not tearing up the beans too much.  We are seeing them in the beans because when he cut the wheat he made the chaff in windrows instead of dispersing it evenly on the field.  This helped save time for the the guy baling the straw.  However, the guy baling the straw didn't have his equipment set correctly and left a lot of the chaff on the ground.  So there are strips in the filed that aren't growing beans too well because the residual chaff was too thick to plant through.  The hogs, therefore, are rooting in the strips of residual left behind by the lackadaisical straw baling!  However, he still got 9000 bales!
