A Special Dove Opener in Texas
« on: September 04, 2016, 12:59:09 PM »
Due to work and football we were not able to go out on our first hunt until Saturday evening.  All my old hunting buddies are doing their own thing these days.  Looks like our 30 year tradition has ended.  Now days it's just me and my two sons Logan and Cole, and their buddy Gunner.   Gunner spends Labor Day weekend with us (3 years in a row now) and joins us for dove hunting.  Cole is 9 now.  He got his first shotgun this year.  I wanted to buy him an 870 but he wanted "the black one" Lol.  So last week I bought him the Mossberg.  If he likes it I'm good with it.  And Logan is starting year 3 with his 870 shotgun.  My my they grow up quick.

So it appears we are building a new and better tradition.   I'm happy to accommodate these three fine young men and of course my little buddy Dash.  She is amazing.  Yesterday evening we bagged 15 birds total.  Logan and Gunner took down 2 each, Cole 1, and I shot clean up.  I've been dove hunting 40 years and I witnessed the longest shot I have ever seen.  I don't even want to speculate how far it was but Logan made the shot. It was incredible.  Cole gave it heck with his new gun.  It was his first dove hunt where he carried his own shotgun.   I kept him with me and helped him with his safety.  He did good.  And little Dash acted like it was just another day in the office.  She retrieved all 15 birds.

It wasn't a banner hunt but a very enjoyable dove opener for all of us.  I just love my boys and love it that they enjoy doing this.  They had a blast.  They were up at 6 am this morning ready for round two.  One thing I do know is the tradition I started 30 years ago with my friends will now live on through these 3 awesome young men.

Yari yes I guess you could call it that.  We either set up in a field or by a pond. If you can scout them out and find a fly-way  between their roost and the field they're going to that is the best scenario.  Fly-way shooting is awesome.  We were all on a pond yesterday.   It's a good late evening spot.  We got most of our shots the last hour or so of daylight.  These birds were heading to roost and stopping in for a drink on their way. I'm about to pull them off the grille now! Lol
