Shepard Scopes
« on: June 10, 2017, 11:35:43 AM »
Was reading my July 2017 Shooting Times and under new 2017 Optics was Shepard Scopes!!! Wow, only knew one guy back in the late 70's early 80's who had one and could understand how to use it....but it was a name that I have not heard anything about in a very long time. It is good to know they survived all the optic hype and new scope manufacturers that we are familiar with today...

The Shepard Scope was in time period long before Rangefinders, Ranging Scopes, Ranging Binoculars, etc...it simply took the known/estimated deer information like the distance from the top of the back to the brisket and all you did was to line up the circle to the deer and squeeze off...very simple but effective design, especially back then when there were no electronics what so every built into the scope, even the illuminated dot or reticule was only on very expensive scopes and those were few and far between....

Would like to hear from the Old Timers that either know or have one of the Shepard Scopes....

As a foot note to the Shooting Times Optics - the prices of Optics has risen dramatically and most of these upper dollar scope, binos, spotters, are way above most of our pocket books!!! At these prices the scope is a once in a lifetime investments and now the cost of optics are now more than the rifle itself....Not everyone can afford Schott Glass or Grade 8 Leica Binoculars...thank goodness for manufacturers that make $500 and below scopes that are moderate to good quality....

nice looking scopes. i think i would personally stay with the bigger name company. they should have more 'staying power' if i have issues down the line. that could be just me.

inside, i say bigger usually isn't better, but i want to know that will be around when i need them
