Do it yourself Thermacell refills?
« on: April 10, 2017, 06:49:47 PM »
Any of you Thermacell guys out there mess around with refilling your butane cartridges or repellent pads for your bug machines?  I just refilled a couple of the little butane bottles based on some guidance I found on YouTube - really easy to do.  I did toss my bottles in the freezer first just to reduce the internal pressure (after pulling out the little anti-refill device) but not sure that is really needed.  Both filled on the first shot without the need to vent off any pressure.

Now I need to figure out the pads.  Saw a couple of different approaches on YouTube as well but haven't got the right materials on hand at the moment to try it.  Any of you guys have a method you like?

I've watched several of those videos as well but have not yet tried it myself.

Just FYI - neither of those butane bottles that I refilled on Sunday are showing any signs of leakage - appears to work just fine.  Trying to do some reading on the various materials I might be able to use to re-activate the pads, will keep you posted if I find anything conclusive.

Yari, I bought mine a couple of years ago based on the positive comments I've heard here on TH.  Love it for turkey hunting, and also take it with me when we're out kayaking and it works great there too.  Even used it at my sister's place last summer when we were just sitting out on her deck and it made a huge difference.  Haven't bothered with it for bowhunting - I tend to avoid the weather when the skeeters are active if I can anyway.

I also keep one on our porch. I watch a lot of TV out there in the evenings during the summer and the thermacell makes a huge difference. I am going to attempt to refill some butane bottles later today...

Very cool. I'm a big TC guy too. I'll be trying this. Hopefully I don't blow something up

Hey Russcat - good to hear from you, long time no see.  This was pretty easy.  One thing I did was use a pair of side cutters rather than pliers to pull out the refill valve.  I really didn't want to bugger up the brass above the o-ring or risk nicking the o-ring itself, so I clamped down with the side cutter jaws below the o-ring, with the jaws all the way against the plastic bottle.  Using a little bit of leverage against the top of the bottle, the brass valve starts sliding out pretty easily.  Once you get that out, turn a small wood screw into the anti-refill valve that is still in the bottle, and pull it out in a similar fashion.  Shove the brass refill tube back into the bottle until it's fully seated, and you're ready to refill with a common butane refill cylinder.  I had a brand new TC bottle available which I used for reference on how far to fill them.  The YouTube videos are pretty straightforward.
