Time to burn the woods again
« on: March 22, 2017, 11:10:05 PM »
Last Thursday and Friday we burned 2 different spots on our farm. The 1st one we burned on Thursday, it was all planted pines, in fact 2 years ago I posted pictures and comments about burning that field.  The next was a patch of woods that only had a few rows of planted pines in it.  It was very rough with years of vegetation that had gone unburned.  It was actually a bedding area but it was beginning to be a threat if fire and wind got into it, a wildfire,  there is a neighbors property that could be damaged.  So we eliminated some of that risk.
The weather was right, the ground was dry enough to fluff up the fire breaks without boggin' a tractor down and a call to the Florida Forestry Service got us an authorization number.
Both burns went as planned, set the fires adjacent to the fire breaks on the down wind side and let it burn itself into the wind.  Very simple and easy to do in the flat piney woods but my hat is off to those guys that deal with the horrific fires in the mountains.
Controlled burns eliminate the fuel that kindles wildfires and provides fresh browse for Bambi and crew as well as eliminating undesirable woody plants that compete for nutrients the pine trees could use.
Didn't think about pictures when we started the 1st burn and on the second burn it was almost over before I took a few pictures.
1st pic shows the first burn, good and clean
2nd pic shows a feeder, a game camera and our biggest food plot
3rd pic show the Friday fire burning beside the fire break next to the already burned planted pines
The last pic shows the fire burning into the wind and about to burn itself out on the mowed edge of a fish pond.
Deer season never seem to stop, always something to do in the woods.  My problem is it's gettin' to be a lot harder than it was a few years back @--0--0117.  Y'all reckon being over 70 has any thing to do with problem ##$%#1119.

Hard work is always hard work, it doesn't care how old or young you are. You might consider hiring out some of the harder work the next time, supervising is not as labor intensive.  --099-780

Looks good - I burned about an acre of pasture grass off in front of the house a couple of weeks ago, and the regrowth is already in full swing.  Had hundreds of cottonwood saplings coming up in it - I'm hopeful that the burn will kill off most of those, if not I'll need to get after them manually.

OFG - I wish I could send you some of this rain we're getting here - I'm sick of it and want to start working on my plots.  I have close to 5" since Friday night.

about 2" in 24 hours here and it's just sitting here spinning. we have enough, but i would rather have it wet than burnt up. that's saying something even after the flooding last july at the cabin. hang in there mad

I would love to do a burn in my timber but I just do not have the guts to do it. Our crazy winds here in IL can switch in a second. I know a burn does a lot of good for native growth.
