My coyote skin is done! Updated with pics!
« on: February 28, 2017, 10:05:33 PM »
Finally got the call that my coyote skin is done, so I picked it up earlier this evening.  I was expecting something like a bear rug, spread out, but this one was done whole.  It is very nice, nevertheless.  I will have to wait till tomorrow to take a pic under better lighting conditions.  When I first held it, I started looking for the entry and exit holes.  Interestingly enough the entry hole was on its right side.  Found the exit hole on the chest, between the front legs.  The coyote was facing me when I shot it.  It must have turned just at the instant I pulled the trigger.

Added pics.  the skin is not as pale as the pics show.  The white fringe on the outside is more of a pale golden yellow.

Yari, the coyote was skinned without a belly slit. It's more like a tube.

Ordindy, I'm pretty sure I got the same skin.  This skin is of a female, and the entry hole corresponds to a 12 ga slug, and the pic I took after retrieving the coyote, the chest was covered with blood, and that is exactly where the exit hole is.

BTW, my wife is not too happy about the skin.  She doesn't like it at all.  Too much like a house dog, to her.  I may have to find a home for it.

Look forward to seeing pics. I have spent countless hours shooting 3d targets with my bow working on judging angles. It still never ceases to amaze me how difficult it can be and how fast an animal can shift positions under real hunting conditions.

Agreed, sorting out those shot angles after the fact vs the picture in your head from the time of the shot is always a bit interesting.  Anxious to see your picture Louie - then you need to go out & hunt up another so you can get one done like a bearskin - collect the whole set!

Louie
May be a crazy question.
How do you know the skin you got, is from
the coyote you shot?

Louie did you skin it yourself?   Leaving it whole like that is more typical of how trappers process their skins.

Beautiful nonetheless!!

Mike, I did not skin it myself.  Never skinned a coyote before, nor did I want to take the time.  I took the coyote to a trapper, hoping he would just buy it off me.  He said price of fur was very low and not worth his time, but he gave it to a young trapper he's been mentoring.  He skinned it, and sent it to be tanned, along his other hides.  He's been selling the tanned skins on eBay, which apparently is more lucrative than selling raw hides.  I was also told it's much easier to flesh the hide while in the tube shape.  A flat skin would have been more impressive and easier to display.

I think it would look great hanging on a wall, of course my wife likes that kind of stuff too!

Louie do you think you can you just cut it and display if flat?  Cutting from the inside so as to minimize cutting of the hair.

Not sure if tanning it this way would cause the hide to shrink anywhere where it might not  lay flat.

Mike, I think it would look a whole lot more impressive if it was displayed flat.  I have thought it would really look appropriate laced up on a rectangular frame,  BTW, you would need a large wall, as the length of the skin, from tip of the tail to the nose is 56". I suppose the tail could be left just hanging.
