Video to get you fired up
« on: March 12, 2017, 07:12:30 PM »
Came across this video about fanning turkeys.  Had read about it before, and never to be done while hunting in public land for obvious reasons.

I think it is a cool idea and would love to try it but I really do not think it is safe, even on the private property I hunt. Just not worth the risk.

To me, that comes under the category of "What made you think that was a good idea?" It's a good way to get shot in the face! Just my opinion.

Too dangerous. Some states may even prohibit that method as "stalking" Turkey.

Even on private land you just can never be sure enough.

Totally agree...it sure looks like a productive way to get a gobble to come a running!

I know it sounds crazy, but did you notice that in every hunt, the hunter was out in an open area, not thick woods.

Do a Youtube search on "Turkey Reapers" and you'll see a lot of this.  I have one of their DVDs, and have the itch to give it a try.  Louie - from both a safety and an effectiveness standpoint they always stress to do this in an open area - ideally a big open field with out a lot of tall vegetation (private land that you have some good confidence in being alone on).  I'm amazed at how the hunters can get away with walking and kneeling behind those fans.  The one thing that you might want to consider if you do it is to run a more open choke - a lot of times these birds are killed in close, and it's ridiculously easy to miss that bobbing head at close range with a tight choke - did you see the hole blown in that bird's fan on the second kill in the video?

Roger, I did notice the hole in the fan.  I'm well aware how tight the patterns can be, at short distances.  that's why some guys mount a low power scope or a red dot on their turkey guns.
