Headed to Fall Turkey camp
« on: October 27, 2016, 01:08:09 PM »
Leaving tomorrow morning with both my children to hunt fall turkey in Pa. My daughter went last year and is hooked and the boy will be one his first big game hunt. They are shooting well and I hope we can run down a flock early. As a bonus we hope to get there in time for an afternoon squirrel hunt and turkey scouting session I am pumped up!!  My buddy said he has coyotes on his trail cams at his place so I may need to carry my .22 hornet just in case. I will post a report when I get back.

Good luck, FYI I saw a flock last week of over 30 and another of about 15-20 while muzzleloader hunting. We had a really good hatch this past year, lots of young birds.

UPDATE: We got in Friday about 3pm and found a large tree across the camp road. Managed to get around it and still go squirrel hunting. My son did get a shot at a squirrel but it was too far out- he was still excited. No turkey sign at the camp so Sat we drove to my buddy's farm. Hunted til noon with no luck spent an hour scouting- no sign- ate lunch and back at it at 3. On the way in my two fast walking children busted 5 gobblers off a small food plot- I saw them but could not get the kids to stop in time. The birds went down over  a steep bank we ran up but they were gone. So we set up just down the hill from the plot in a Hemlock bottom. About an hour later my buddy shot up on the opposite hill. Later we found out it was the 5 gobblers and he was trying to bust them up- fail. So we move to an unpicked corn field and sat for another hour. The kids got tired and it was 72 degrees so we went to the house. My other buddy came with us got a drink and headed back out for the last hour and a half. The kids were done- sleeping. So I join my buddy. we were walking in the road leading to the food plot and there they were 5 gobblers- been busted twice and still hanging out!. We stepped off the road and set up- did some calling but they would not leave the plot until dark- You guess it went right back over the bank!!. So no kills but we all had a great weekend hunting and visiting good friends. We did do some logging later that night by dragging the tree with a tow strap so we could get in and out without going cross country 4 wheeling!! Both kids want to go back next year and I'll have company this spring for sure- THEY ARE HOOKED!!!  ;D

Sounds like it was a good time Bluetoe! Sometimes the best hunt is the memories made, not the freezer filled.

Sounds like a pretty good hunting trip. the best part is that you have two new hunting buddies.
