who says there isn't inflation?
« on: June 09, 2016, 08:14:03 PM »
I was looking at the cabelas archery catalog. when did broadheads get to be $13-15 EACH??????????? I bought a bunch of Rocket mechanicals a few years back for $21-24 a 3 pack. I always buy a bunch when I find what I like in case they are discontinued. by next year, I will need to find another head. I can't believe the cost. $10 per arrow PLUS $15 for the head?????? at $25 per shot, you better make it good.

the gov't says 'no inflation'. they are obviously not bowhunters. don't even get me started on the cost of bows

Looks like they are trying to keep new people from getting into the game. If things had cost this much 40 years ago i wouldn't be hunting today!!

Sure would be fishing alot though!!! @--0--0118

Yeah I don't know Yari - are we all just paying for all of the silly "pro" endorsements and sponsorships that you see these days? (more of that every year)  Cost of raw materials has gone up some in the last 20 years, but it's a very small part of the total cost of a head.  Labor rates have not changed much, and I think that's probably offset by all of the things they can do with CNC manufacturing equipment.  Unless they're using some sort of precious metal or exotic heat treatment, it has to be other expenses (like marketing, etc) or simply the companies taking bigger profit margins.  As we discussed in a previous string a few months back, this is one of the reasons I'm not "one and done" on my heads after a shot on a deer.  If the structural integrity is still there, I'll sharpen 'em back up & take 'em hunting again.

big profits and celebrity endorsements is my take. since rage is paying for celebrity trips and charging the farm, the rest have followed. there is plenty of palm greasing going on now. it's sad for the industry IMO

I guess we all need to wait for sales.

It has gotten to the point that nothing about hunting or fishing is cheap anymore. I'm to the point if it's not on sale I just wait. Food cost has to be the most inflation. It's just amazing what things cost now!

Yep. Food skyrocketed when gas went to $4 + per gal.  Now that it's half that food is still where it was????

You can blame Obamacare on a lot of it, as hunting and fishing supplies have been classified as medical supplies and are taxed as such, everyone wants a piece of the pie and therefore add a tax to everything. Remove all of the taxes and the products may become affordable again. JMO

OK.. I'll let you in on a little secret that some of you may already know.. After years in the outdoor industry, I have seen it change dramatically over the last 10 years. While all of you have your favorite brands, products and companies, they are all actually owned by big conglomerates. In fact, there are only 3 or 4 companies that own 99% of the brand name hunting companies. Most even own competing companies (Tinks & DDW, Muzzy & Rage). in the past, they used to try and hide this fact but no more. Muzzy and Rage shared a booth at ATA show. So did Tinks & DDW. Pradco (huge parent company) had a huge combined display of most of their companies. Take Muzzy and Rage for example.. These are the two biggest, most popular broadhead companies. They can price them as high as they want because they are only competing against themselves. If you decide to go with a broadhead from a small, new or startup company, they will either go out of business (run out of business) or be bought by the conglomerate.

So, the pencil pushers in these parent companies look at numbers all day. Some companies do well while others don't. They look at the bottom line of the parent company and adjust prices by demand and bottom line.

In the past, clever outdoorsman would create a product and try to build a business out of it to support their family. Now, they build it to sell it to a conglomerate. It has totally changed the outdoor world.

it's big money these days. I hate it every time I see a buyout. the same thing happened w/ ROCKET Broadheads. was it NAP that bought them?

extra taxes and conglomerates are making prices out of control. all I can say is you better be a good shot at $25 a time. and you better hope you don't hit a rock or get a deflection. could add up to an expensive season.
