My turkey times running out
« on: May 21, 2016, 06:00:46 PM »
I missed the opening weekend running up to the cabin for some emergency repairs, I only got out for the morning hunt last weekend and this weekend I'm still recovering from the flu that pummeled me quite hard me during the week.   I've got one weekend left to make it happen.

I just hope the holiday weekend doesn't draw any unwelcome people to my corner of the field.  My buddy said they were planting this week so hopefully that will be done before next Sat.

I'm done.   The season ends today and I can't get out.    I hunted Saturday and Monday but never even saw or heard a bird.     I think the late season combined with high temps have shut them down or they are just pretty much done.

Maybe I can catch one during the fall season.

Saw a bearded hen walk across my yard this morning.  I think she was laughing.

I have been seeing baby's since last week around here. I had a hen in my yard all spring and Now she comes out once in a while with 15 baby's. Had no idea one hen would have that many, but when I do see them it's just the one hen and all the baby's.

I have had hens with chicks come through the yard on other years, but seems like usually is two or even three hens, with as many as 12 chicks.  Every time they would come through, I would start counting to see how many chicks were still alive.  The more hens, the better odds for the chicks' survival, IMO.

Glad you are all seeing lots of chicks.   Hopefully a lot survive.

Raccoon's are the single greatest predator they have, esp before they hatch, the coons will change their habits to raid nests in the spring.   The chicks chance of survival increases once they are mobile and even more so when they can fly.

The two hard winters we had a couple years ago really seemed to reduce the population around the area I hunt.    I hope the last milder winter and warm spring will help in bringing the numbers back up.

I'm doing my bit to help any chicks.  This morning, I sent one coon on a one way trip to the moon, did the same to another one that was digging in my garden, tearing out my new squash plants while digging for worms.  Always happy to help the turks.
