It's Time
« on: January 29, 2016, 08:07:12 AM »
With our hunting season running down to the wire and me being tagged out, it's about time to get the ole crappie poles out for the month of February! I got a monster of a list of things to fix and replace. Basically I have to re tackle my whole operation this year and with just a week left before I hit the water I could say I'm procrastinating a little bit. I've decided to try to fill the fish side of the freezer up this year and forego the first couple weeks of turkey season to catch them.
Who else is headed to the water in the next few weeks?

Me!  I can't wait to pull some slabs!   My bass boat is long gone. Now I have a pontoon and a Jon boat.  I like to fish for everything.   But for the freezer my favorite is definitely crappie.

freezing rain right now, but i'm going out on the ice tomorrow if the roads allow. I heard of a good sunnie/crappie bite. i'm down to 2 walleye meals in the freezer right now. that's danger time for me. I like at least 5-6 meals to be safe. LOTW was a bust this year, so i'm in production mode right now

Yes sir I'm about ready to get after some fish myself. The freezer is light and it needs a few slabs restocked. About the 3 week of February things should be gang busters for a few months!

went out yesterday. caught 20-25 sunnies. only 6 were eaters

we were in 6" of ice and full sized trucks were driving all over. 20 yards away, there were 3 trucks tight together. they had ice races on the same lake. there had to be 40-50 trucks parked 3 deep around the track. I was amazed nobody went through. there was a lot of water in that area on the way off, so the ice was sinking. these guys are just nuts

Yikes 6" is barely enough for a snowmobile or atv!

Around here, KY, when the water gets INTO the 40s, the bass start moving up some. I have been amazed how early the bigger fish move up and I don't try to miss out on the fishing when the water approaches 50. Some of my best catches have come on 43-50 degree water. Maybe not as many bites, but better quality. A few yrs ago I found myself dying of cabin fever and went bass fishing on Dec. 31st. That outside temp was 43, the water temp was 43. I got 7 bites that day like I have never had in a single day before or since. I was only able to actually land 3 of these, but all were over 4lbs with one being 6. I had 2, that I actually got right to my little 2 man pontoon type boat that were VERY nice. All of the fish that day were just barely hooked in the top of their lip and when I got the big ones to the boat and before I could even attempt to net them, they would make one more dive and poof! They were gone   :'(

Needless to say I started going on or around that same date for the next few yrs and while I did not have THAT kinf of success as that first day, I still was the envy of my buddies with the catches I was fortunate enough to make.

My family loves them some bass fillets!!! LOL
