lake of the woods- lotw- updated 1/18
« on: January 09, 2016, 10:45:16 AM »
4 of us heading up to LOTW Friday for our annual ice trip. they will be making ice this week w/ temps close to -20. on Friday they only had 10-12" of ice. I like at least 14" for car travel. i'm sure the ice will be cracking all night. ice cracking means making ice at those temps. it's a good thing.

we'll be sleeping on the ice. a couple guys like to sleep until noon so a sleeper shack works well. I like to get up early. nothing like fresh walleye through the ice for breakfast. I can't wait.

it's actually pretty nice unless the heat goes out or CO2 issues. last year the CO2 alarm went off in the middle of the night. glad we had it. we were all feeling pretty bad because of it the next day. talk about a headache. CO2 is nasty

i'm back w/ all my fingers and toes. it was -28 on sunday actual temp. windchill was worse than that.

the cold shut down the fishing. we caught 26 walleyes in 2 1/2 days between 4 of us. it was brutally slow. no big fish, no eelpout, no toupees.

the good news is I found an ice shack outfitter that seems to have it figured out. good service. good shacks. he has a 10 man shack that is 13x 34 that he has booked as long as he has ice. folks are really liking that one

it was good food and good friends. the fishing could have been a lot better, but we had a great time anyway as always

good to see you made it back.  Been wondering about you.

Are you saying you stayed on the ice for 2-1/2 days and it was -28?   ##$%#12

The cold snap always shuts them down.  A group of us went up to red lake over New Years and we did pretty good, had our limit by sundown on both days.  It's a good time even if the fishing is bad.  The hum of the vexilar/murcum flasher is relaxing

Amen to that brother. That was freakin cold that weekend and a little freaky being out on the ice. I think ill stick to ice being in my glass and not under my feet!

the good news is the wind wasn't bad. if that was whipping, it would have been real nasty.

one trip it was -50 windchills. it was the best crappie fishing I ever had on Red Lake. unfortunately, word got out and it's tough to get a crappie now. it was absolutely amazing for a few years though
