Look who showed up at the rabbit distress call......
« on: December 18, 2015, 04:20:57 PM »
We set up to hunt coyotes and bobcats with the whirlybird going and the rabbit distress call blaring.  Within 20 minutes we noticed a boar coming out of a wet thicket area (about one acre) in the middle of the winter wheat field.  He looked around and went back in.  I traded my .22-250 with my wife for her .204.  She has yet to kill a hog so I told her to shoot first (keep in mind we were predator hunting with small calibers).  We were set up behind a round hay bale which makes an excellent rest.  As soon as she shot the 55 gr soft point he bolted, but not at break neck speed, I knew she had connected.  I let a 40 gr accutip boat-tail fly down range (we could hear the bullets hit him with each shot and could see dirt mushroom off his hide) as he ran toward the waterway we were letting more lead fly.  She hit him in the spine on her third shot and his rear was literally dragging.  He somehow got his legs back under him and made it to the woods.  We eased in after him after firing 7 rounds.  I had one left in the .204 and she had two left in the .22-250.  I ended up using the last three rounds as he snaked through the trees and brush.  We had to back out for the night.  It rained all day yesterday so we couldn't go check, but today within 30 yards of my last shot we found him piled up.  I am estimating him between #225 - #250.  He has a nice set of cutters.  We beheaded him and put his head under a 55 gallon drum for a nice european mount.

Nice shooting...those hogs a tough to take down with a small caliber. We shoot them behind the ear and they'll hit the dirt. I've seen them hit behind the shoulder with a 270 and just keep running and never found.
