Yote down and a plethora to go.....
« on: December 04, 2015, 07:41:04 AM »
Well I decided to get my butt out of bed and do a little predator hunting.  It was a beautiful calm morning with frost covering the cut soybean stubble.  Just before I started calling I noticed a little buck intrigued with my whirlybird.  He wasn't  intrigued enough as he quickly vanished into the pine thicket behind me.  I began calling with my outdated Johnny Stewart rabbit distress.  I was barely into my fourth sequence and while scanning the fields I saw him barreling down toward the whirlybird out of the corner of my eye.  Before I could get on him he had already knocked the whirlybird over (see picture #3) and was starting a mystified retreat.  As soon as he stopped at 75 yards ol' .22-250 nearly took a leg off with a 55 gr sp (see picture #2).  This is the second one killed on the farm this year (wife got one during deer season) with many more to come hopefully.

Nice going!

I learned the hard way to stay ready when starting my call sequences.  From my experience if they come they come soon and fast.  I have rarely had anything come in after calling for a while.  Last year I lost a quivering rabbit decoy to a yote.  He came running in from behind my ground blind and took my decoy on the run.  He didn't even slow down.  I'm sure he was disappointed when he got it to the dinner table to discover there was no meat just a spring on the inside!  LOL.

The other day I was in Dick's Sporting Goods and found a Fox Pro Jack Attack decoy on clearance.  It works with my Fox Pro call.  I can't wait to try it.  But I will have my gun up and ready next time so as not to lose my decoy again.

One more big yote bites the dust.

I got a small female on election day and the following Saturday took out a big male.

Could not be a better visual of  why the 22-250 will always be my favorite predator weapon.

Nice job!  We have a few yotes around here, but I have not been successful in calling them in.  Neighbor claims to have seen a pack of 6 while deer hunting.

Sounds to me that your outdated Johnny Stewart distress call isn't so outdated after all!   Congrats!
