.22 Hornet for Coyote?
« on: August 25, 2015, 07:47:51 AM »
I know this a mainly about the .22 Hornet, but the question is game animal specific.

Is the .22 hornet with 45-50 grain pills enough for our northern coyotes?  I like the idea that it may be quieter than say a .223 or 22-50 (say, is it?) and really do not need the reach of the higher powered rounds.  Max range will be about 150 yards.

Also, it is avail in many smaller/lighter rifles for easier walking/stalking.

P.s., I already have a ruger ranch in .223, but it just isn't accurate enough for me.

We hunt coyotes all winter with hounds. We use mostly shotguns but when we hunt an open rifle friendly area, our guys have 223's, 22-250's, 222's, and one guy has a 22 Hornet. Let me tell you that the Hornet holds its own and will handle any yote that it meets.

Yep, no worries with a .22 Hornet at the range you mentioned.  I would expect it to be quieter than a 22-250, with my limited experience they have quite a crack.  Not sure if it would be noticeably quieter than a .223 or not.  Are you allowed to use a suppressor in your state?    we're not, :-(
