Success Today!
« on: April 25, 2015, 02:44:21 PM »
What a day! Left plenty early to get to a new set up on the private land I hunt on. Alarm goes off at 3 AM and off I go! I get the parking spot, get dressed with my camo and start to put on my turkey vest with all my calls, hat, gloves, face mask etc and discover I left it home! Ugh! Take off home (30 minute one way), get my vest and return. I wanted to sneak in during total darkness and it's not working. Okay, I get dressed, put on my vest and a car comes down this road and I get hit with a spotlight from the State Police! Just wanted to know where I was going and if the landowner knew I was coming. Told him yes, I have written permission in my pocket but he said have a good one and left. So I hurry up to try and get in position with a long walk and by know I am sweating! I decide to try and do the set up I wanted and see what happens. I hear a gobble several times at 6 but no movement and he wasn't all that close but shut up. At around 6:45 I hear a gobble pretty close so I wait and then I hear him walking away. I call, he responds and I wait. I hear another gobble behind me getting real close so I am frozen like a statue waiting. Finally I see 3 jakes coming down around 30 yareds to my right. They come into the decoys, mill around a little and then decide to leave. I am trying to decide if I want to take a jake but as they decided to leave, I decided to take one. The Mossber 835 with the Remington Nitro #6's drops him like a rock! I think I got more breast meat out of him than I did with the big gobbler from last year! So the day started out really bizarre but ended well. Here are some pics...

Decoys set out to the right of the dead bird just beyond the brush line, about 25 yards

Congrats!!!   Funny how things can turn around.

That 835 is a beast.   I took a tom with mine a couple years ago, It's a heck of a turkey gun.
